According to Catherine (2004), communication is defined as "a reciprocal process of sending and receiving written, verbal and/or nonverbal messages which convey information, feeling, attitude, and ideas in a social context". A positive way of communication can solve many of the issues in health care facilities. When someone is seriously ill, there will be many things that need to be discussed. Some of these discussions may be difficult and emotional. A good listener/speaker can change their emotions via good explanations. The quality of consultation between nurse and patient is significant to outcomes such as correct diagnosis, effective treatment, concordance, medication adherence, quality and safety. Moreover, Nurses needs speak to people of varying educational, cultural and social backgrounds and must do so in an effective, caring and professional manner. Patient-centered approach also serves to reassure patient families that patients are receiving the necessary treatment. Within the nursing field, such skills are considered as indicative of best practice

Give evidence in this section of a 'plan' i.e. strategy/s that you intend to use to fulfil the goal. The number of strategies will depend on the goal but put time into the depth of the strategy/s rather than the number. The strategy will determine the artefacts that you collect. For example, if you are thinking of some sort of health goal then a diary or exercise plan may be arefacts that you collect. If you use dot points they need to be explained. Intent: Future employers will require that you recognise and show willingness for learning as part of your job. This assignment is designed to assist students to begin the task of developing the necessary skills for

professional growth and development. Each student enrolled into this subject has been provided with access to an e-Portfolio that will allow them to collect and select items they think relevant to their professional development and to post reflections on their experiences and the knowledge gained

from processing their learning experience. Objective(s): This assessment task addresses subject learning objective(s): A, B, C, D, E, G and H

This assessment task contributes to the development of graduate attribute(s): 1.0 and 5.0

Weight: 60% of subject marks

IN YOUR E PORTFOLIO, COMPLETION OF ASSESSMENT ITEM 1. Length: Length: Goal Statement - see inside the e Portfolio but only a couple of sentences required; Strategies - may be presented as a chart or list but should have some framework or be easily followed; Reflective paper - 1000 to 1200 words. Task: This is a progressive piece of work.

Setting a Goal and Rational: each student is asked to choose a short term goal that has been

identified as an area that you want to spend time building your knowledge about or strengthen your competence in. Your choice or 'goal' can be clinically related, academic or personal, for example improve my communication, working in a team, how to approach a patient, practice taking a consent from a patient or how do I demonstrate respect for others. It can also be a personal goal e.g. become

healthier for example lose weight, stop smoking. The goal MUST be achievable by the completion of this subject. Whether you achieve the goal is not the point of the exercise: it is what you have 'learnt' that is the important part and that you are able to communicate this to your portfolio. The goal also requires a short phrase of two lines or a short paragraph to give a reason for your choice. It is NOTacceptable to use the example of 'time' as your assessment as this will be discussed in depth during class.

Strategy for fulfilling the Goal: this is a plan of how you will fulfill the goal and can include a time frame, any pre-planning needed, resources required and used other people who may be involved. The strategy will vary with individual goals. Instructions are available in the portfolio and you will

receive further information at a lecture and practice in a tutorial in week 2. The goal, rationale and strategy are submitted early in the semester so that you receive feedback from your tutor. This part of the assessment task is worth 15% of the 60%. See below for submission

date. Collecting and Selecting Evidence: three (3) artefacts are to be chosen and uploaded into the E Portfolio as evidence of learning during or work done to achieve the goal. Artefacts are 'things'.

Examples for your portfolio can be pictures, journal articles, video clips, audio or reports. Confidentiality and privacy is important and you need to adhere to copyright as you determine your artefacts for the portfolio. More on copyright on UTSOnline in the subject. Each item will require a rationale or justification for why it has been chosen. This need be only a line or two as most of the

justification can be put into the reflective paper.

Reflection: a reflective paper will provide validation of learning. Reflection gives insight into change or growth and will link the goal, strategy and artefacts. There will be input in week three about reflection and some examples of student reflections online. Instructions and a framework for the reflection are present in the portfolio. This will carry the majority of the marks. Only the reflective part of the assessment task needs to be submitted to Turnitin. A breakdown of the marks and submission dates are as follows:

GOALs, RATIONALE AND STRATEGIES, 15% OF THE MARKS. SUBMITTED BY SUNDAY 17TH AUGUST 2359 HOURS, IN EPORTFOLIO.

COLLECTION OF ARTEFACTS AND REFLECTION, 45% OF THE MARKS. SUBMITTED BY SUNDAY 9TH NOVEMBER 2359 HOURS IN E PORTFOLIO. STUDENTS NEED TO SUBMIT THIS WORK IN TURNITIN, THEN ONCE THEY HAVE THEIR SIMILARITY INDEX, INTO THE E PORTFOLIO.
