Assignment title: Information
Design a boss for your game project
Objective:
Design and development of a boss character following character design guidelines and using Stencyl tool.
Introduction:
In this assignment, each student will design and develop a low-fidelity and a high-fidelity prototype about a boss. A boss in video games is a significant and important computer-controlled enemy (a non-player character). Playing against the boss is called boss fight or boss battle. A boss generally appears at the end of a level or stage in a video game and is usually stronger, bigger, more powerful and more difficult to beat than the other enemies that have appeared in the game. A boss can re-appear after being defeated in multiple attacks. Sometimes, a boss can appear in a dramatic way with special music and visual effects.
Instructions:
Design a boss following the below guidelines.
Create a low-fidelity prototype of it. It can be a paper prototype, but it should not be a simple sketch. You can use a software tool such as Photoshop instead of drawing the character using paper and pencil, or use a combination of both techniques. Describe its characteristics in a paragraph, such as: name, personality, size, whether it is a flat or round character, weapons, etc. Also, describe the type of sound effects that will accompany the boss. Explain what are its main actions against the player (e.g. fighting maneuvers). The more details you explain the better your assignment grading will be.
Also, develop a digital prototype of the boss. Create the boss as a sprite using a sprite creation tool such as Piskel (http://www.piskelapp.com/). Create a very simple platform game level prototype using Stencyl (www.stencyl.com). You can include your boss into the demo that comes with the Stencyl Crash Course: http://www.stencyl.com/help/viewArticle/143 using its Crash Course Kit. Don't forget to save the game. The boss should at least move left and right in the level, so a player can control it. You should create at least two versions of the boss: one version for moving the boss to the left and one version when moving the boss to the right.
Write a report on the above. Add pictures of the prototypes and screenshots of the boss creation process in Piskel or another similar tool.
Use your imagination and think out of the box. The boss should be spectacular, and it must have some unique features, for example: speeding up at warp speed, travel in time, etc.
Bear in mind that this assignment is worth 5% of your marks. I expect to read a detailed report with at least 4 pages. Submit it in PDF format. Don't add to the report huge pictures that will occupy 2 or more pages. Upload to CMS both the PDF report and the game prototype made in Stencyl in a ZIP file.
