ASSIGNMENT BRIEF Module Title and code: Soil Mechanics Assignment Title: Portfolio Report Outline of Task: (To include list of learning outcomes): To produce a portfolio report containing the following components: (1) Notes from the Mungrisdale field trip (scheduled for Wednesday 26th October). To include a technical description of the field trip location and an appraisal of the engineering aspects of this location. This component is worth 30% of the overall mark for the assignment. Descriptions of where we went and what rocks were seen from a geological point of view. Also some mention of the valley type, ie U shaped glacial valley – shows sketches and include notations of what was where. (2) Plasticity laboratory session 1: cone penetrometer method. To include both a brief technical description, a comparison of results with the other method and the calculations of LL, PL and PI and the completion of the result upon the plasticity chart together with a comparison/brief discussion with your results from the other method of measuring LL. This component is worth 20% of the overall mark for the assignment. (3) Plasticity laboratory session 2: Casegrande method. To include both a brief technical description, a comparison of results with the other method and the calculations of LL, PL and PI and the completion of the result upon the plasticity chart together with a comparison/brief discussion with your results from the other method of measuring LL. This component is worth 20% of the overall mark for the assignment. (4) Shear box laboratory session. To include both a brief technical description and the calculations of the shear strength parameters from the test results. This component is worth 20% of the overall mark for the assignment. For this assignment component (1) is worth 30% of the mark, components (2), (3) and (4) are each worth 20%; the remaining 10% will be allocated for report compilation (e.g. structure and presentation). Please refer to the Criteria for Assessing Work against Degree Classifications at the end of the MIP. The assignment is worth 50% of the final mark for BN2506. Your report needs to be in an acceptable report format and fully referenced where necessary. Site location plans are available at Digimap via the library databases. Photographs/ diagrams/ tables/ sketches may be included provided that these are pertinent to your report. Word count: 2, 500 words.
