Swotta – A Community News Portal
1 Background
According to the census in 2011, 27,809 Bangladesh-born people in Australia is recorded, an increase of 72.8 per cent from the 2006 Census. The 2011 distribution by state and territory showed New South Wales had the largest number with 17 007 followed by Victoria (5114), Queensland (1672) and Western Australia (1496). Considering this sharp growth and in order to incorporate the culture, heritage and people of this background a group of people decided to launch a 'Bangla' news portal named 'Swotta'. They used to cover the community activities that happen across Australia enriching the multi-culture activities of this country. They run for a year and later failed to upgrade their site in continuous manner. In this stage, 'Swotta' wants to come back to online again with mobile friendly website with following key points in mind. The major Functionalities include -
• Filter the news content and highlight the related news based on the geography of the visitors visiting the website.
• Should have the flexibility to add/remove a category of news.
• In order to ensure high availability, the system should ensure seamless traffic handling capacity.
• Social media integration
• Automatic newsletter delivery
• Provision for readers to add comments
• For mobile users, limiting data usage is one of the crucial issue to ensure fast loading of the site. Therefore, an intelligent and smart algorithm should be incorporated that would minimize the loading time without putting any drastic impact on end reader.
• Look & Feel is extremely important for the client.
2 Objectives:
At the end of the project, students should analyze, design and develop a mobile friendly news portal.
3 Deliverables
The project deliverables may include preliminary analysis report on existing site of similar nature, requirement analysis specific to client and an implemented and ready to use news portal.
