Assessment for this module will consist of 100% Coursework, with online submission.
You will produce three short reports on QoS, WLAN vs Cellular and WPAN using ZIGBEE and
present your theory and analyse your simulation results.
You are required to submit each report and QUALNET file in a zipped folder in each instance.
You will chose your best report and produce a 10min recorded presentation, you will submit
the slides and the video of the presentation online by a specified date.
Written Report Contents
Each report should include the following sections:
Abstract
Introduction
Theory
Simulation Configuration
Results and Analysis
Conclusions.
The reports produced should be in the third person and your theory section should be
supported by suitable references, cited in an applicable manner (such as the Harvard System,

port/refzone/
To keep within the guidelines of the University for Anonymous marking, within the paper
when stating your names, please replace these with your Student ID and email.
Remember when writing each report that you will be addressing an intelligent non expert,
who is interested in your particular topic. On this basis you do not need to explain every
term, only those which you would surmise would be of interest.
Submission Requirements
You are required to submit an Electronic submission in BlackBoard:
• OPTIONAL Draft submission
• 3x Submission of FINAL report
• 3x zipped copies of QUALNET Project
• 3x excel spreadsheet containing results
• 1x Submission of a 10 slide power point presentation
• 1x Submission of recorded presentationAssessment Criteria
Work will be graded according to the criterion-referencing on the following TABLE – read it
carefully to avoid losing marks unnecessarily. All students are expected to have read and
understood the university's leaflet on plagiarism – any student submitting work which is not
their own will be dealt with under the university plagiarism rules. The submission deadlines
are shown in DEADLINES section. Try to hand in your assignment earlier than the deadline to
avoid problems with queues of people trying to hand in their assignment late.

The following pages contain information specific to each of the three reports.1 QoS in Wired and Wireless Packet
Switched Networks
You are required to produce a report entitled "QoS in Wired and Wireless
Packet Switched Networks"
It is your task to determine which of the three different network
configurations provides the best QoS under congested conditions.
The network configurations are
• IP
• IP-ATM-IP
• IP-MPLS-IP
Your report will include a literature survey on Quality of Service, TCP/IP, ATM
and MPLS networks. You will then explain your simulation model from which
you will collect relevant results and draw suitable conclusions as to which
network provides the best QoS for real-time data. A suggested topology for
your experiment is shown in Figure 1.

Methodology
A suggested methodology of this task is as follows:
• Create three separate equivalent scenarios: one for IP only, IP-ATM-IP
and IP-MPLS-IP
• Simulate all IPv4 for VoIP system with SIP signalling and another nonreal time application
• Collect results
• Add excessive amounts of Background traffic to the network
• Re-collect the results and compare the results obtained
• Determine the best solution in terms of performance and cost to
provide the best QoS.2 Wireless versus Cellular Access to the
Fixed Network
You are required to produce a report entitled "Wireless versus Cellular
Access to the Fixed Network"
You will investigate the different access methods to the fixed network
including:
• 2G Cellular
• 3G Cellular
• WiMax
Your report will include a literature survey on different wireless and cellular
access methods including the components required and the technical
specifications.
You will compare and contrast the different access methods for different real
and non-real time applications.
You will then explain your simulation model from which you will collect
relevant results and draw suitable conclusions.
A suggested topology for your experiment is shown in Figure 2.

A suggested methodology of this task is as follows:
• Create three separate equivalent scenarios:
o wired – IP-Core Network –IP-2G
o wired – IP-Core Network –IP-3G
o wired – IP-Core Network –IP-WIMAX
• Create traffic for real-time and non-real-time traffic
• Collect results
• Compare the performance of each scenario and explain why the results
differ by referring to the relevant theory.
3 WPAN Networks using Zigbee Technology
You are required to produce a report entitled "WPAN Networks using
Zigbee Technology"
You will investigate the different technologies suitable to create a WPAN,
these will be simulated using QUALNET.
Your report should include a literature survey that answers the following questions:
What are the different technologies for WPAN
Compare and Contrast the different technical specifications of WPANs
What are the different topologies of WPANs
Give an example application for each of the identified topologies
The simulation topology is shown below and the details are shown in the
excel spreadsheet found on BlackBoard under assignment submission section.4 Presentation of any of above
You will chose one of the previous components to present a 10minute
presentation.
