Promotion and talent management are very important in HR. Recently, due to many changes in our work setting as well as cost of living issues, many employees have started to voice out their right for promotion. Management, on the other hand, due to demand and supply factors, are in the agreement that cost need to be at the lowest point. These two contradicting opinions, might create many conflicts at the work place.
Question: Should promotion be based on seniority or competencies? What are the expected or unexpected outcomes if promotions are based on seniorities or competencies?
Tasks: 1. You are required to conduct a research on this issue.
2. You can choose either to do this research by using EITHER the quantitative or qualitative method. You are also required to choose only ONE company as the target population.
a. For quantitative – you are allowed to either use previous questionnaires or create your own questionnaires. There must be a minimum of 10 questions (excluding demographic questions such as gender, age etc.) using the likert scale of 1-7. These questionnaires should be able to capture your respondents’ opinion on the above stated dilemma. (Note : You are required to attach your questionnaires as part of your appendix). Students who use this method are required to get at least 20 respondents. b. For qualitative – you may conduct interview sessions with at least ONE HR manager from your selected company. Ask their opinion on this matter by focusing on this dilemma. You are required to design at least 5 interview questions excluding demographic questions. (Note : You are required to list all the interview questions as part of your appendix).
c. For either method, you are subjected to the clearance from the respondents. In the event that the respondents disagree to disclose their background, you are required to take necessary action to ensure their confidentiality.
3. Report writing
a. Based on your research, write a comprehensive report on this issue. By using at least FIVE latest articles (2007 and above), you are required to justify your opinion, your research findings and previous literatures.
b. For Quantitative – you can analyse your data by using any analysis tools such as Excel, SPSS, SEM or any other relevant analysis tools.
c. For Qualitative method – You have to report your interview outcomes.
d. Provide your conclusion and recommendations on the dilemma.
