Industrial Robotics and Automated Assembly
MNFG409
Problem Based Assignment (Caster) 20% of Final mark Session 201617
Peter Fox
Aim: To design a robot cell that can automate a magnesium die casting machine.
Learning Outcomes: Improved skills in: To be able to analyse a problem and identify methods can be used to automate the system To identify risks and safety requirements for such a deployment. To plan a solution to the problem To articulate the design and the design process in written form.
Knowledge and Understanding: The design requirements for the implementation of robotic systems and the required safety features. The design requirements for robot/ human interactions. The interactions between robots and other parts of the automated system. The requirement for machines other than robots within the automated system.
Intellectual Abilities: The ability to analyse a process and identify risk, challenges and advantages. To be able to identify the most efficient method of carrying out a process.
Practical Skills: The layout/design of robot work cells The safety requirements of the use of robots.
Summary: This problem based assignment is designed to present a simplified manufacturing problem so as to stimulate thought about how robots are used in an industrial environment. You need to consider the automation of a manual casting system and develop layouts for your design concepts.
