NEC3103 Hydrology and Water Resources Semester 1, 2017
Individual / group of no more than 3 students
Assignment 1 – Drainage design (15%)
Due date: Thursday 7th Apr 2017 ( 5 pm)
The accompanying plan shows a new subdivision of 19 allotments (numbered blocks) located at Whittlesea. Each student is required to:
design the drainage scheme for this new subdivision. All allotments are required to provide one end drainage outlets, connected either to the street kerb and channel or to an underground drainage line. One discharge point is available for the whole subdivision and is located at Sturt Court, with an invert level of 32.10m.
You may design using a 10 year return period. Each standard residential block can be taken as (15m x 10m) 150 m2.
Overall design should be submitted in with the following items:
A plan of subdivision with delineate catchment sub-areas, showing all proposed drainage lines and pits. All pits should be clearly numbered and the diameters of all pipes shown on the plan. Easements (if any) should also be shown. Clearly tabulated pit schedule (see class example). Staple the above submission.
Pipe schedule assumptions:
Required pit drop generally 50mm to 100mm for same size pipes. Different size pipes use the obvert level.
Acceptable Velocity: min 1.0m/s and max 4.0m/s
Pit location maximum spacing of 90m.
Runoff coefficient Lot - 0.6
It is highly recommended, each student is to attempt the overall design as practice.
