Section A 1. ‘The New and the Old: the report of the “Life in the United Kingdom” Advisory Group’ (known more briefly as ‘the Crick report’1), was reported as recommending that: becoming a British citizen should be considered a major life-changing event for those who undertake it; those taking citizenship should attend citizenship classes; those gaining citizenship should be able to demonstrate that their learning of English has “progressed”, rather than forcing all applicants to reach a common standard irrespective of their previous knowledge. Critically assess: a) the role the Crick report assigns to language in processes of acculturation and citizenship; and b) the view of language in relation to personal and social identity reflected by its recommendations.  2. English is increasingly used throughout the world, either as a first or second (or even third) language. At the same time, the notion of Standard English still seems to be an important one. Is there more than one Standard English? Evaluate the notion of Standard English, considering social, linguistic and ideological assumptions. How do you explain the growing concern in the modern world with the revival and maintenance of lesser-used languages? Examine the problems inherent in reviving or maintaining a language and show what factors seem to lead either to success or failure in such attempts, illustrating your answer with examples of real situations. 4. Because of the widespread use of English nowadays, a major concern in English-speaking countries is how to persuade young people of the benefits of learning other languages. To what extent do those whose mother tongue is English need to learn other languages, and what are the individual and societal benefits of doing so, or the negative repercussions of their not doing so?
