Assignment title: Information
Assessment 1: Individual, Critical analysis reflective paper (1000 words) Weight: 20% Background
The changing nature of the workforce composition
In 1990’s a workplace was predominantly a stable workforce where many staff stayed with the organisation or business for life. In 2017 many different working conditions exist beyond simple and permanent full time roles in an organisation. The nature of work has also changed due to higher levels of technology that enable part time and flexible working conditions such as work from home or remotely. Today the workforce composition has full time permanent employees, contractors, part time, shared roles, working remotely and casual workers on a needs or demand basis. This variable and changing workforce composition impacts on multiple factors in a workplace, including leadership, motivation, communication and decision making to name a few factors. In one major retail organisation in Australia with 300 stores and an average floor space of just under 5000 square meters, employing over 20,00 staff, the full time composition is 4% and over 50% of the staff are under 21 years of age. Some early research by Atkinson (1984) investigated workforce strategies for flexible organisation. His model is shown in the diagram below. (Atkinson, J (1984). Manpower strategies for flexible organisations. Personnel Management, August, 28-31.)
