University of the Sunshine Coast IBS210: Principles of International Business Business Article Analysis Presentation Assignment No. 1 - 20% Semester 1, 2017 School of Business Due: Between Weeks 4 -8 (TBD with Tutor) Group Presentation Time: 10 minutes Submission: In tutorial (must also provide hard copy of presentation in tute) IBS210 Assessment Item 1: Business Article Analysis Presentation By sourcing and analysing a recent news article students will demonstrate insight and understanding of international business concepts. In groups of 2-3 students are to select a recent (within last 6 months) international business related article and link it to international business theory. You are encouraged to choose a short article and are discouraged from selecting the same article for discussion as other groups. The analysis of your article must enable you to link the content to a theory or theories from the textbook. Your analysis will be delivered as a group presentation in tutorial. Instructions: Treat the news article as a case study analysis: Analysis questions • What are the implications for local/domestic businesses and/or the domestic community that operate in the industry of the article? • What are the implications for international businesses and /or the international community that operate in the industry of the article? The use of theory • Demonstrate with examples, the link between the content of this article and the theory from the course, textbook and the IB literature. • Reference and apply the concepts from academic journal articles. Suggested presentation structure: 1. Introduction/ article synopsis. 2. Key theory/theories to be applied. 3. Analysis: implications for domestic and international businesses. 4. Conclusion and recommendations (if appropriate). 5. Reference list. News article selection: • Must relate to international business. • Must not be an editorial or opinion column. • Shorter articles are recommended. • Keep in mind that you are required to analyse the article with respect to theory and the implications for businesses and/or the community. • Try to be original and avoid articles selected by other students. • A copy of the article must be provided to your tutor when you present. Notes: • Business article presentations will be undertaken in tutorials between weeks 4 and 8. Groups of 2-3 will be formed and a presentation schedule determined with your tutor in week 2. • Article must be in English. • The business article analysis presentation is to be undertaken in groups to enable students to develop and demonstrate important skills in teamwork, presentation as well as research capabilities. These are all critical skills for your future careers. • This analysis is an academic piece of work and is expected to comply with the accepted convention and referencing style (Harvard). Therefore, referencing should be included in your analysis. • At least one academic article must be sourced from an A or A* journal, good examples being: o Journal of International Business Studies o Academy of Management Journal o Strategic Management Journal o International Business Review o Academy of Management Review o Journal of International Management o Harvard Business Review • A selection of non-acceptable non-academic sources include: CIA Factbook, Wikipedia and the like. DO NOT utilise these sources. Use of these sources will result in academic penalties such as loss of marks.
