Introduction
Cloud computing is the latest innovation in the information technology arena and more and more businesses are adopting the cloud computing based approach as it provides a great deal of flexibility for business to adopt digital technologies and also help to serve its consumer in better way.
Current State of Affairs of the organisation
The Australian national university is one of the largest university in Australia and is ranked very highly across the globe. There are more than 20000 students which are enrolled in various courses in the university. Administration is looking to increase the number of courses that are being offered and introduce the online courses in the university. (Collier, 2015) University works on a Learning Management System supported by Moodle and internal ERP system is also very old in the university. The IT infrastructure inside the university also does not support anywhere computing. In terms of human resources, organisation employ 4-5 full time IT resource to support the university IT infrastructure and most of the work is with third party contractors.
Change needed in IT infrastructure
The administration of the university is forward looking and wants to provide best possible study atmosphere to the students. The present IT infrastructure of the university does not support present day learning environment where learning management systems have become very important. It does not allow anywhere access to the students to LMS in the campus. The IT infrastructure also does not support huge data that needs to be uploaded in form of presentations, class videos and other things. (Mathew, 2012) University is looking at a wider canvas and wants to extend its reach to the new students through online courses. The company will also require an IT infrastructure that can support these growth ambitions.
Digital Innovation in the Industry
Education industry has seen lot of IT innovations in recent time. Cloud has allowed the organisation to not only build the learning management systems which supports anywhere learning but it has also allowed the universities to develop a better infrastructure to support e-learning. The mobile applications, wireless campuses, cloud campuses are some of the digital innovation that has happened in the industry. The industry can also make use of internet of things in near future which will allow the industry to come with other innovative solutions in learning. (Cenon, 2012)
Components of Strategic Plan
Any new IT implementation must conform with the overall strategy of the organisation. IT must be use to leverage to achieve the strategic goals of the organisation. The university must focus on these components of strategic plan.
1. Use Cloud Computing in learning management system and overall course administration to get the desired results.
2. It is important to focus on providing anywhere computing to the students which will develop better
These strategies will allow the university in achieving its organisation goals as it will help in providing better services to the organisation and secondly it will help the organisation in achieving its goals of starting online learning courses.
Internal change influencers
It is important to identify drivers which are influencing the change that is being brought about by any project. This helps in better understanding of the stakeholders. There can be various tools that can be used to understand internal change drivers like SWOT analysis. The company has one of the best academic rating in the world and this can be leveraged if the IT infrastructure of the company can be improved to not only increase the number of students who can get benefitted by the courses but also provide new age learning environment and research facilities to students which can further enhance the image of the university. (Kumbhar & Gavali, 2013)
External Change Influencer
It is also important to understand the external environment which continuously impacts any given business. In this industry, the external factors are driven through changes that are happening in technological front. The cloud has allowed new areas of innovation which was previously not open like LMS which can be accessed from anywhere anytime, online classes which allow students to take classes from home and many such innovation. These changes make it must for the university to upgrade its IT infrastructure so that it can provide better learning environment to students.
Critical Success Factors
Success of any project depends on certain factors, which if does not fall in place the project may never see an end to its life. This will be a very important strategic project for the organisation and if it fails then it may be a big roadblock towards the goals of the organisation. The key factors that the organisation will need to look in this project can be divided in terms of support, execution and learning. The organisation must firstly convince its top administrators and its academic staff about the need of change. It must convince them to support the project as without their help the project will fail. The second important thing will be the execution of the project and for that the organisation must develop a project committee in which an experience project manager who will need to be hired must be present. The third important factor will be training of people to operate the new IT systems which will help in getting best possible results for the organisation. (Okai, et al., 2014)
Conclusion and Recommendations
It is important for the university to implement the new ERP and LMS which must be cloud based as it will help the organisation in improving its effectiveness. To do so the top administrators must first take academician into confidence by elaborating the benefits of the new cloud based system. The organisation must also form a proper project implementation committee which will help in execution of the project.
