Objective:
In this assignment, students will practice writing a report related to skills set requirements
for system administrators.
Background
As a student of INFT 3026 Systems Administration, one important topic is identifying
relevant job opportunities and the technological trends relevant to system administrations.
At the Week 1 workshop, we discussed the role of system administrators, and what do the
system administrators do. This assignment can be considered an extension of the discussion
we had in the workshop.
In this assignment, you’ll practice searching for relevant job opportunities, analyzing the
expected skill sets, and conduct detailed analysis of a selected skill.
While this course uses Linux to demonstrate various aspects of Systems Administration, it is
important to keep in mind that there are other popular systems (operating system and
infrastructure) adopted in the industry.
Detailed instructions:
Part 1: SysAdmin Job Analysis
Your task is to search for job opportunities relevant to system administration. You are also
required to conduct analysis of the job descriptions, and extract information such as
expected skillsets, job trends, comparisons between different OS in different industrial
sectors, etc.
The assessment criteria include:
• • Methodology of job data collection
• • Quality of the collected job data
• • Quality of the analysis
• • Originality of the analysis
• • Quality of references
Part 2: Analysis of a Selected Technology
Upon collecting and analyzing the job descriptions of system administers, you are required
to pick up one important technology and conduct analysis of the technology trend, i.e.
what’s the likely change of the technology in the near future. Technologies such as
Networking, Database, Operating Systems, Storage, Server Infrastructure, etc, could be
discussed. You can find relevant information on the Internet, and you can utilize online
digital libraries for accessing various academic articles and databases to help analyzing the
selected technology.
The assessment criteria include:

• • Quality of the references
Deliverables:
A report
A report including references
• Penalties apply for over-length reports.
• There is no minimum length. Lengthy report may not necessarily better.
• Proper references should be provided. You can use any popular citation format that
best fits your report.
• You are encouraged to use diagrams and tables effectively.
• You can optionally add appendix which does not count towards the page limits.
Appendix are only considered supporting the main text and they do not count towards
marks.
