Assignment (40%) UXB 131 Semester 1 2017 Poster Presentation: Vision for Kangaroo Point Effective planning processes consult the community to identify and refine design options. Planners use visual and graphical communication techniques to engage residents and the public in discussions about planning policy. Planners use imagery to illustrate design visions. They use colour, maps, figures, photographs, and artists impressions to articulate design details. Effective visual communications improves community engagement and is an important part of the plan making process. You will draw on your assessment of the legibility of the Kangaroo Point cityscape to present a design vision that improves on its structure and legibility. Your vision must seek to strengthen the form (structure) and functioning (legibility) of the cityscape. You must submit your vision on a large poster. The poster must be produced at A1 scale and be visually appealing. You must print a draft poster at A1 scale for an inclass critique in week 13. Details about what is to be included on the poster are described below. This is an individual assignment. Specific Tasks: • Your vision must based on real and tangible ideas. These can be inspired by other cityscapes (in Brisbane or beyond) • Be clear about your vision. Do not use broad use motherhood statements - these have little real meaning. You must apply your ideas spatially to the study site • We will discuss planning principles in class that you can use to underpin your vision • Visit areas you like in Brisbane (or other places) and study them closely. Take photographs. Use these design ideas to inform your vision (ie streetscaping ideas, types of active frontages, types of density, pedestrian connectivity, landmarks etc) • Your poster must be produced at A1 scale and incorporate figures, photographs, illustrations and text to convey your vision • Your poster must include at least one map that identifies the locations of suggested changes and improvements. You can use symbols and other stylized drawing techniques to communicate your proposed image of this cityscape. • Maps must be produced to scale. As with the previous assessment item your map must display appropriate reference information (Title block, scale orientation (north point), border, legend, location, date, map credits (source of data, name of cartographer)) • Prepare your poster using Adobe InDesign. Remember your poster is a visual communication aid for public involvement. It must be clear and visually appealing to a non-planning audience. • All maps, figures, photographs, and illustrations must be clearly captioned and referred to in text. Assignment (40%) UXB 131 Semester 1 2017 Notes: 1. The computer labs will focus on InDesign from week 10 – you will learn how to use this software to prepare a poster at A1 scale. The Lynda.com tutorials offer extra support outside of class. 2. Do not be afraid to make a start – have a go and bring work to class (no matter how you feel about it) for feedback. 3. Use the studio time to work on your poster - even if you have made little progress at home. 4. Ensure you reference all images, figures/illustrations and data correctly. 5. Printing a large poster takes time. We recommend that you print it a few days early to ensure it is ready for the week 13 critique. Print will give you a different perspective on your work. We also strongly recommend that you print your work in colour. It will highlight errors and edits that you can make to improve the quality of your work. This assignment is worth 40% and is due at the end of semester.
