Physical vapour deposition in Aerospace For increase of reliability and lifetime
of mechanical components
Physical Vapour Deposition
(1)
•
Physical vapour deposition
is
a vacuum deposition method.
•
It
is
used
to
form thin coating
on
materials.
•
PVD comprises condensation and evaporation
of
material.
•
Common coatings applied
by
PVD are Chromium nitride, titanium aluminium nitride, titanium
nitride.

Physical Vapour
Deposition
•
Physical vapour deposition
is
used for high melting point and
low vapour pressure materials.
•
PVD
is
carried out
at
high
temperature.
•
In
PVD, materials goes through
condensed phase followed
by
vapour phase and then return
to
thin film condensed phase.

Conclusion to Experiment
(3)
•
While concluding the experimental results,
it
can
be
clearly concluded that erosion
is
the major
factor which damages the aircraft compressor blades.
•
So
the basic criteria
of
choosing the suitable coating
is
the erosion test.
•
The coating which should
be
chosen, should
be
corrosion resistant also because corrosion
accelerates the surface erosion.
•
Corrosion test helps
to
choose best physical vapour deposition method for aircraft compresser
blades.
•
From the above experiment (
Ti
, Al)N coating
is
resulted best coating from all other coatings.
