Page 1 of 3 School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology University of Technology Sydney Subject 48352 Construction Materials Assessment Task 2: Materials Design Project Instructions  Students must complete this assessment task in groups of 2 to 3  This assessment task requires an individual report to be produced  Reports will be checked for plagiarism.  The layout of the report shall comprise the following sections: o Cover page o Table of contents o Introduction o Concrete Mix Design o Material specifications o Bibliography  The total length of the report must not exceed 10 pages (inclusive of Cover page, Bibliography and Appendix).  Students are required to use high quality referencing sources available in the UTS library such as textbooks, online databases, electronic journals and online standards  Students are required to use the Harvard style of referencing  Students should refer to following website link for assistance in the write up of their report: http://www.lib.uts.edu.au/headsup Submission Details  Students must upload a soft copy of the report (i. e., assessment task 2) to a special email address given for submission of this report. Due date and time of Assessment task 2: Before 11:59 pm on Friday 02/06/2017  Late submissions will receive a penalty of 10% deduction in marks per day the report is late for a period of 7 days only. Please contact the subject coordinator for further instructions on how to submit a late report.Page 2 of 3 The Project – Part 2 For a 100m span steel arch bridge construction, shown in Figure 1, the sub-structure is made of reinforced concrete abutments. The overall height of the arch at mid span is 15m. As a Materials Engineer for the project, you have already produced a report on the requirements of concrete for the abutments in Part 1 (Assignment 1). In Part 2, you are now required to produce a report that incorporates the steel arches, vertical suspensions, pinned and roller supports. You are also asked to produce a ‘steel’ specification. Figure 1 Steel arch bridge with reinforced concrete abutments (a) Give a suitable steel cross-section for the arch and the bottom chord. The crosssectional dimensions and type of steel used should be detailed. (b) Select suitable cross-section(s) of the vertical hangers and type of steel used. (c) Show details of the two steel supports and type of bearings used. In answering (a) to (c), provide the test results you obtained in the laboratory (attach it as a brief report in the Appendix) for black mild steel and cast iron and discuss their behaviour. Compare the behaviour of the steel used in this bridge with those of black mild steel and cast iron in terms of strength, ductility and fatigue. (d) The structure is located in a coastal zone. A similar bridge located nearby, constructed 25 years ago, showed corrosion of steel in the arches and vertical hangers. Illustrate how you would prevent it in your new structure. (e) Prepare a material specification for the above project considering the type of steel used, connection details and welding requirements (One page).Page 3 of 3  Marking Scheme Student names: Student numbers: Date of submission: The breakdown of the marks associated with assessment task 1 is shown in the assessment criteria below. The marks awarded for this assessment task is based on clear communication and presentation of this report.
