ENS 5147 Advanced structural analysis and design
Project 2 - Civil Engineering Numerical DESIGN – FEM in application: using commercial FE software to design real-world irregular shape structure.
Weight: 10 marks
Group presentation: Thursday 25/5/2017.
Submission: 4.45pm Friday 26/5/2017. No late submission accepted.
Your engineering group is given a task to do preliminary design of a structure to welcome visitors to the South West Wine Region of WA.
The proponents have in-principle support to design and build a 26m (yes, twenty six metres) tall artificial grape vine that would look a bit like that described in the attachment ‘MARGARET RIVER WINE REGION Entry Statement Concept’.
Ahead of a detailed work, your group would work to firm up what is currently an in-principle concept idea of I steel beams and timber into something that might be workable. Foundations and structural work associated with the vine itself form your work scope; as well as scope for exploring alternate construction materials (carbon fibre, Kevlar, etc.) and jointing methods. A 10% scale model would be a great outcome that could be developed using these materials and 3D printed component parts as well for the best design from the class.
You are expected to use Strand7 for the tasks.
You report and presentations include but are not limited to:
Auto CAD igs file which has the vine tree structure ready for importing into Strand7
FEA for Wind load
FEA for Earth quake load
Design for load combination: gravity, wind load, earthquake. In which, conduct yielding and buckling analysis and structure sizing.
FEA for structure natural frequency. Conclude if any issues regarding wind and earthquake spectral.
Design of concrete foundation.
