Use a google and library search to do scholarly research into a current topic in mobile research
Use a google and library search to do scholarly research into a current
topic in mobile research
Go to google and enter "research ethics" as a query. Fig 1 gives an example of the response.
Fig 1: Google response to query "research ethics" in Australian domain on 1st Jan, 2012.
In this example the top few hits are all related to medical ethics, with the wikipedia encyclopedia coming in at
number 4. Note that there are over 180,000,000 matches.
Now enter "mobile research ethics" as the query.

Now the top hits cover medical, business, education areas and the last item, "[pdf] Mobile Phone Usage Ethics
Code", seems relevant. Also of note is that the number of matched documents is now about 67,000,000, about 85% of
the previous query.
As you become more specific the number of documents in the collection drops. It is also the case that you get more
documents related to the ideal query that you are trying to formulate. You also need to experiment to determine
whether the ordering of the primary nouns effects the search result, ie what is the difference in response to "ethics
research" and "research ethics" queries?
You should now come up with your own research question and refine the query to get relevant documents to the
research query.
Google also offers a service known as google scholar. Use google scholar and repeat the above instructions. Note the
difference in the response document collections. Research ethics has about 2,000,000 responses and mobile research
ethics has only 300,000 responses. I assume Google has filtered the original document set to only deliver documents
only from more scholarly sites.
To access the conference and journal publications it is usual to search a research database to locate the publication.
The CQU library offers access to research databases to CQU students. Fig 3 shows the library homepage.

Enter the query "research ethics" in the green Discover It region as shown in Fig 3. The response takes you to an
authorisation process, as only CQU students and staff have access to the copyrighted material in the databases. You
should enter your student number and password as requested to proceed. The default then runs the query against the
EBSCO database and returns the results. An example is shown in Fig 4.
Fig 4: Response to query from EBSCO database.
In addition to access to the database in many cases an electronic copy of the relevant publication can also be
downloaded, note the PDF Full Text icon under the 1st article, clicking this link will download the electronic version.
As these publications are copyrighted CQU pays the copyright costs on behalf of CQU students.
Click on the DATABASES link on the navbar at the very top of the page and select Information and Communication.
This will take to you to the screen as shown in Fig 5.

IEEE Explore searches the IEEE databases. These are a good source for technical publications. Click on the IEEE
Explore link and repeat the query experiment using the search terms.

Written Assignment 3 - Guide
Look for journal articles to use as the basis for your essay. You might like to choose 3-5 and whittle the choices
down to two as you start to organise your critique.
1.
Start working on assignment 3 by planning your introduction, essay body and conclusions. Remember a
critique is not the same as writing an essay on the topic. If you write an essay on the topic you will fail the
assignment. What you must do is consider the arguments given and comment on the evidence used and
whether this makes the author/s case.
2.
