Project Description
Subject: Remote Area Power Supply Systems (MIET 2009)
Renewable Energy System for an Autonomous House
Description:
Assume that you are running a consulting engineering firm and a client has approached
you about the possibility of using renewable energy systems as a source of power for his
house. (The house is 2 km far from the grid and connection costs are estimated to be
$50,000 per km).
Assume that 4 people live in the house. Furthermore, assume that the client would be
happy to observe energy conservation principles.
Estimate the energy demand for the house. In doing so, use information
about your own house based on energy audit. Reduce the total electric
energy consumption to 5 kW hr/day or lower by maintaining only the
essentials and using energy efficient appliances.
Design the required power supply system by mixing P.V. panels and some
axillary electricity generator plus battery storage system. You can also
incorporate an aero-generator or a hydro-electric generator if you want to do
so.
Size the above system for the load.
Size the renewable energy system keeping in mind the winter and summer
load.
Cost the system using information available from product suppliers.
Do a life cycle costing of the system.
Compare the cost of all renewable energy systems with the option of
connection to the grid.
Prepare a report for your client. Your report should include:
A summary for your client (not more than 5 pages). Assume that your
client information about solar energy is very basic.
Appendices:
Calculations
Analysis
Copies of appliances catalogue
And any other details of your work which can be an indication of the time
spent on the project
Please Note:
Your report should be a professional report as the ones that you would produce for a
client in a consulting engineering firm.
Project Submission Date: Before 5:00 PM, Friday, 2nd June 2017
