Introduction The aim of this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of project management and the nature of developing a project charter. The learning outcomes covered by this task include:

1) Apply problem solving and creative thinking to identify and develop innovative solutions to complex project management orientated problems in organisations.

2) Develop and present a resolved project outcome that demonstrates an understanding of the major issues and challenges faced by project managers in the ICT industry.

3) Communicate effectively as a professional and function as an effective leader or member of a diverse team Introduction and Background

Grand Acres Golf course is a prestigious golf course in Melbourne Victoria. Grand Acres have three golf courses, one in the inner city suburbs (Glen Eira), one in the outer city suburbs (Cranbourne) and a third golf course under development (Pekanham). Grand Acres has been in existence since 1960 and has a total of 3000 members across all their golf courses. Members pay a yearly fee of $2400 and a joining fee of $1000.

In recent years the directors of Grand Acres Golf Course has decided that they would like to invest in technology. One of the biggest drawbacks of the current system is that members have to wait a significant time before they get feedback on their round. After a member has played a round in the early morning it can take until early evening to find out where they are on the leader board. This delayed feedback impact negatively on the sense of achievement and progress of golf players. Furthermore, there is a need to change the clubhouse into a friendly hub where members can brag about their achievement on the golf course.

Currently the board of Grand Acres Golf Course is considering implementing an Automated Golf System. See video clip for an example of the system under consideration.

A number of facts and issues with the current situation are outlined below in Table 1.

Staffing costs increase on a yearly basis Staffing costs increase on a yearly basis at a bigger rate than inflation. Grand Acres has reached a point at which they cannot reduce staffing further without automating some of the business processes. Previously the state of technology did not allow them to consider automation, but recently promising new developments have made them reconsider their position. Need for innovative solutions to gain a competitive edge To attract new members and to retain their current members Grand Acres has decided to investigate the potential of new technology. The development of an Automated Golf System will provide such a competitive edge. Current system requires significant upgrade and investment Grand Acres has not invested very little in technology. Currently a manual system is still used for all functions of the organization.

This business case is a request for funds, with a large scope that is intended to provide a long-term competitive advantage to Grand Acres Golf Course. It is intended that the project contained herein, upon successful implementation, will provide a compelling range of tangible and intangible benefits for Grand Acres Golf course as a whole. It is anticipated that upon successful implementation and delivery of expected benefits, further follow-up projects could provide further benefits, subject to available funding.

The task As project Manager you are expected to do the following:

1. Write a brief current state assessment of Grand Acres Golf course's situation with respect to what they are seeking to do as an organization and the role project management will need to have;

• Hints: This is not a technical assessment report. Your current state assessment should be based on Grand Acres Golf course's organizational change due to the implementation of the new systems (such as change in business process, organizational structure, business model and revenue model). 2. Write a Project Charter for the project. The Project Charter should include the following: • Project Title • Project Authorisation date
