Assignment title: Information

Scenario Analysis Report for Joint College 1 Introduction

Your task for this assignment is to present a Scenario Analysis Report, outlining your recommendations in the following scenario.

The management committee of Adel University has decided to develop a joint college with the University of Dujiangyan City in China to offer a number of engineering programmes including an undergraduate Computing programme

If all goes to plan, the university hopes to have around 60 undergraduate students each year studying on the 4 -year courses in China. The courses will be taught be staff both at the University of Adel and the University of Dujiangyan.

To this end you have been commissioned to help formulate the ICT strategy for the joint college. The current provision in the Computer Science department in Dujiangyan can be found below, however the labs in the Computer Science building will need to be shared with other Computer Science and IT programmes at Dujiangyan. The University of Dujiangyan have made it clear that they are willing to consider providing new equipment as required for the Computing programme, but of course the budget for the project task is limited and therefore you must justify all costs. Both Universities recognise that investment needs to be made to make the college successful. At present workstations in staff offices and teaching rooms that will be used by the joint college consist of PCs which are at least 5 years old, running a mixture of Microsoft operating systems. Whilst they have an internet connection, there is no central file store, nor any way of managing them remotely.

The building proposed for the college currently contains the following rooms and facilities: Academic staff offices; Administration and support staff offices; A lecture theatre

A further teaching space similar to the Active Learning Lab An empty room that could provide a computer cluster with up to 15 spaces A meeting / tutorial room. A social area similar to the Long Room

Existing equipment in the Computer labs in Computer Science Department comprises of: 5 Windows servers 2012, SQL server2012 65 Desktop Computers MS Office2013, Windows 7 professional

5 Scanners 5 Printer s

The data speed accessing to the Internet is too slow to meet the experimental demand of the College.

2. Your Role You are tasked with analysing the scenario and producing a report that addresses five different issues.

You should put forward your recommendations in each of these areas in a short report (Max 10 pages). You must provide a justification for each of your recommendations. If you perceive any uncertainties or ambiguities, then you should identify those problems and clearly state what further information you would require to finalise your recommendations and or what assumptions you have made. 3 The Issues to be considered

Your recommendations for the five issues, together with a brief introduction, a final overall summary (including combined estimated costs) and a bibliography, should be presented as eight separate sections in your report. 1. Project Management: Consider and specify a series of appropriate structures, tools and procedures which would enable this project (to design, install and commission the new ICT facilities) to be managed effectively. You should note that risk management, and early warning of problems, is a key part of the overall project environment of the university.

Consideration of "risk" during the design, installation and commissioning phase should be included in this section. [10 marks] 2. Computer Hardware: You need to consider the servers, as well as personal computers for the various types of staff and students, as well as visitors. You are going to need to specify appropriate computer hardware for these different groups. Make recommendations, and justify them. Include approximate, but realistic, cost estimations. [10 marks]

3. Computer Software: It is clear that a number of computer services will need to be provided. Considering suitability, as well as cost and usability, make recommendations for software that you think should be acquired, installed and supported for the different users. Your recommendations should cover operating systems, specialist services and end-user applications. Don't forget to make recommendations for any server software as well as for user machines. Include approximate, but realistic, cost estimations. [10 marks]

4. Security & Business continuity: Consider a risk analysis of the whole environment. Consider the ways in which the rooms and facilities might be used, now and in the future. Explain how the high level security goals of the Joint College will be captured and interpreted. Making appropriate assumptions, present your high level security goals as formal requirements.

Specify how those requirements will be met and how the extent to which they are met will be monitored. [10 marks]

5. Ongoing Management: Consider the structures that the College might wish to put in place in order to ensure that the ICT provision meets both the current and the future expectations of ALL its customer groups. [5 marks]

This assignment is worth 20% of the total marks available for this module.

The introduction, summary and Bibliography are worth a further 5 marks, making the total 50.
