Assignment title: Information
Internetworking Case Study
Value: 40%
Due date: 24-April-2016
Length: 5000 words
Format: Word + Network diagrams
Task
The fictional company CCA Pty Ltd is in need of a new corporate internetwork. The company has a head office in Melbourne and has branch offices in Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Hobart. There are also remote workers located in Bendigo who require access to the corporate network including file & print services, e-mail and Internet in a secure fashion.
As part of your assessment you will be required to:
• Design a LAN for each office complete with VLAN and IP addressing schema.
• Design a WAN allowing connection of all sites, and remote workers, to the corporate head office.
• Design an Internet connection and centralised corporate infrastructure – you may locate this at any of the offices or within a provider cloud but you must justify your approach.
• Provide a secure and logically correct configuration template for the following devices:
• WAN router – to be deployed at each site.
• Core switches – to be deployed at each site
• Internet router – suitable for your chosen Internet service.
You may present your report in any way you deem appropriate but you must cover the following broad sections at a minimum:
• Needs and requirements for the new network – you will be provided with some of this information in week 1 of semester but you will also need to interview your "customer" (your lecturer) via the student forum for any additional detail you feel necessary. This will only be done via the student forum so that everyone will receive the same information.
• Detailed design showing your logical design for each new site.
• Configuration templates for WAN routers, Core switches and the Internet router.
Although this assessment will primarily focus on the networking devices and components of the design you will still need to make some recommendation on security in particular with respect to the Internet connection.
Wireless access is not required.
Your report should detail the following sections outlined in the marking criteria commensurate with the marks allocated and be addressed primarily to the IT management staff at CCA who are somewhat technical. You should assume that the network is to be built from scratch – you have a blank canvas to work with – although you will be required to justify any recommendation you make or any product you specify.
Your solution should exemplify best practice and produce a secured network installation for the customer. You must justify all of your recommendations as you would need to do in the real world, citing appropriate references where applicable.
Templates must be presented as actual switch/router code for immediate deployment by the customer. Your templates should only include code that is relocatable across devices of the same type. You are not required to build fully functioning code for each device – rather concentrate on the basics such as device hardening, standard management interfaces and access, consistent application of VLANs and implementation of mechanisms like spanning-tree portfast, duplex and speed settings and similar.
Rationale
This assessment is intended to:
• Assess your ability to identify needs and requirements of a corporate internetwork, taking into account technical, budgetary, and stakeholder considerations.
• Assess your ability to design a robust network that takes into consideration inter- and intra- office requirements.
• Demonstrate your ability to create clear and useable templates.

Criteria HD DI CR PS
Identify needs and requirements
- Includes the requirement to keep or change any existing internal equipment
- Includes performance and capacity requirements
- Must take into account budget and any technical constraints.
- Must accommodate all stakeholders. Student has comprehensively discussed the needs and requirements or the organisation, with a clear discussion on the existing internal equipment and whether the organisation should keep or change it. Performance and capacity requirements have been carefully considered and addressed in the answer. Budget, technical constraints, and stakeholders have all been addressed appropriately. Student has discussed the needs and
requirements or the organisation, with a good discussion on the existing internal equipment and whether the organisation should keep or change it. Performance and capacity requirements have been carefully considered and addressed in the answer. Budget, technical constraints, and stakeholders have been addressed throughout. Student has discussed the needs and requirements or the organisation, with some discussion on the existing internal equipment and whether the organisation should keep or change it. Performance and capacity requirements have been considered and addressed in the answer. Budget, technical constraints, and stakeholders have been briefly addressed. Student has shown some understanding of the needs and requirements of the organisation but discussion on the existing internal equipment has been brief. Performance and capacity requirements have been considered and briefly addressed in the answer. The student hasn't addressed budget, technical constraints, and stakeholders in sufficient detail.
Detailed Design
- Best practice network design taking into consideration the following as a minimum:
- Layer 2 components – mainly VLANs.
- Layer 3 components – IP address design and allocation.
- DNS, e-mail, Internet access, remote access, file and print, database & security.
- Must include a network diagram and a basic BoM for all network/security hardware.
- You must justify your design with solid industry based evidence. Student has addressed all major design considerations comprehensively, demonstrating best practice, and justifying their design with solid, well thought out industry based evidence. Student has addressed all major design considerations, demonstrating best practice, and justifying their design with solid industry based evidence. Student has addressed most major design considerations, demonstrating best practice, and justifying their design with industry based evidence. Student has addressed some major design considerations and has justified their design with evidence.
Configuration Templates
You must provide configuration templates for all the following network devices at a minimum:
- Switches – access, core or distribution depending on your design.
- Routers – Internet and WAN routers. Templates for routers and switches provided and include excellent industry based security features and no errors in configuration allowing templates to be applied across all devices easily. Templates for routers and switches provided and include good security features and no errors in configuration allowing templates to be applied across all devices easily. Templates for routers and switches provided and include some security features and very few errors in configuration, templates can be applied across like devices easily. Templates for routers and switches provided but show no evidence of security features and some errors in configuration.
