You have just been hired as the network manager of Alfa Travel, an organisation that has been in business for a while and has recently acquired another smaller organisation in order to increase market share. The original organisation operated a fleet of buses that conducted tours and travel packages in the UK. All of its computer applications existed on a central mainframe at company headquarters in Manchester. The acquired organisation conducted helicopter tours around Scotland. All of its systems were client/server based and were based in Edinburgh. Due to the merger, Alfa Travel's IT architecture is now a disparate combination of computer systems and manual procedures. Given the general description of the stakeholder groups below and using the general client/server classes prepare a cohesive IT architectural plan for the merged organisation and present it to the CEO for approval. You should address all potential advantages and disadvantages of the plan from the perspectives of the various groups of stakeholders. • Bus/Helicopter maintenance workers and mechanics (10 employees, 5 in Manchester and 5 in Edinburgh) o System for ordering parts/supplies • Twenty five drivers based in Manchester and 8 pilots in Edinburgh o Log and route schedule information • Administration and HR (5 employees based in Manchester) o Employee records o Financial records • Marketing (8 employees, 3 in Edinburgh and 5 in Manchester) o Marketing activities o Customer interactions • Management (9 employees) equipped with portable computers o Access to all applications is required Other specifications: • Beside the bespoke applications mentioned above, each office needs to have a secure network environment where staff can surf the Internet and download files from the Internet securely. • The network cabling in each office has already been wired as an independent 100BaseT Ethernet network via a 100BaseT switch. Upgrading the network cable is not necessary at this stage. • Each office will be allocated 2 network printers. • All staff should be able to check and send email internally and externally. • A website for the merged company will be supported. The website should include a booking facility. • A Cisco router (2600 series) is installed at the Manchester connected to the internet and the ISP has allocated the network 222.240.10.0 for use by Alfa Travel. • The Edinburgh office is currently connected to the internet through an ADSL link. Required: • A 3,000 word individual report (excluding appendixes). The report should include the following areas: o Analysis of business requirements o Network solution and equipments with justification that allows staff o To use the required applications o To store files and backup resources o To share the network resources such as printers o To check and send emails internally and externally o To access Internet securely o Any other relevant deployments. o Justify and assign IP addresses to appropriate interfaces on all network equipments that you proposed i.e. routers and PCs. o Breakdown of the costing. o Explanation of your configuration on the routers, workstations and servers, and how expansion of the network will be accommodated once the two companies merge, also allowing marginal expansion for the future. o Evaluation your proposed network design implementation and critical appraisal on your work. • You should also submit a detailed networking solution design using Packet tracer) (30%). There different network groups should be represented, appropriate IP addresses should be configured and there should be end-to-end connectivity in the whole network.
