Each question is worth 10 points. 1. An educational psychologist was interested in time management by students. She had a theory that students who did well in school spent less time involved with online social media. She found out, from the American Social Media Research Collective, that the average American high school student spends 5.72 hours per week using online social media. She then obtained a sample of 45 students who had been named valedictorians of their high schools. These valedictorians spent an average of 14.13 hours using online social media every week. Their standard deviation was 6.80. Is there a difference between the valedictorians and the American high school average? 2. A psychology professor was curious how psychology majors fared economically compared to business majors. Did they do better or did they do worse five years after graduation? She did some research and learned that the national mean for the salary of business majors five years after graduation was $62,500. She surveyed 31 recent psychology graduates at her school and found their mean salary was $48,000 with a standard deviation of $10,000. Is there a difference between the psychology graduate and the business graduate average? 3. Listed below are the weight gains for 30 anorexic girls who received cognitive behavioral therapy. Is the weight gain for these girls different from the average weight gain nationally for anorexic girls not receiving treatment of -1.5 pounds? An addictions researcher measured tolerance to alcohol in first-year and fourth-year college students. She gave participants a standard dose of alcohol and then had them walk along a narrow line painted on the floor. The higher the percentage of the distance that they were on the line, the greater their tolerance to alcohol. Is there a difference between first-year and fourth-year college students? The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) presents participants with ambiguous pictures and asks them to tell a story about them. These stories can be scored in any number of ways. Werner, Stabenou, and Pollin (1970) asked mothers of 20 normal and 20 schizophrenic children to complete the TAT, and scored the number of stories (out of 10) that exhibited a positive parent-child relationship. Assuming that TAT scores are a quantitative measure, is there a difference in TAT scores between families with normal and families with schizophrenic children?
