Assignment title: Information

Assignment 1 Photojournalist for a Day Overview Almost 50 years ago, Martin Luther King had a dream, "that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character" (King, 1963). This same philosophy of integration and equality is not only applicable to race in society, but to all groups of people who had been previously treated unfairly. Indeed, the 1960s is an era characterized by the struggle for civil rights of elders, women, gays and lesbians, the disabled, and wage earners. All of your communities today are forever changed due to these groups' struggles. Assignment In this Assignment, you are going to become photojournalists. Go into your community with a camera and gather evidence to create a Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation of progress (or lack of progress, if you wish) made toward the achievement of civil rights of these and other groups in society. Think about changes in peoples' rights, including women, the elderly, the disabled, and ethnic and racial minorities. Look at businesses, place names, neighborhoods, public facilities, parks, monuments, and other aspects of the built environment. • Please read and follow the photojournalist protocol found in the docsharing area before doing this Assignment. • Be sure to include and fulfill the following objectives in your presentation. • Your presentation makes a definitive statement about the progress (or lack of progress) that has been made in your community since the civil rights movements of the 1960s. • The photos are your own original work. The quality of your photos will not be assessed. • Each slide supports or refutes the thesis that progress has been made in the community since the civil rights era of the 1960s. Caution: Do not take pictures of children in public places or at schools. Photographing people is not recommended because it requires getting permission. Do not trespass on private property without written permission from the owner. If in doubt about the appropriateness of your proposed photo subject, consult your instructor. Please take a look at the unit Assignment grading rubric on the course syllabus before you submit. Use it as a checklist to see if you have answered all the required Assignment questions and followed other requirements like the use of outside sources and APA formatting. Your presentation should be between 4–8 slides with accompanying notes and, in addition, one title slide and one references slide. This would add up to 6–10 slides total. IN POWERPOINT (1) INFORMATION THAT APPEARS IN COURSE/UNIT 4/ASSIGNMENT: Assignment Description: Explore your community with a camera and notebook. Photograph and make note of changes that have taken place since the civil rights movements and related legislation of the 1960's. Use photos and notes to create a PowerPoint presentation that shows and explains changes in your community. Think about changes in peoples' rights, including women, the elderly, the disabled, and ethnic and racial minorities. The quality of your photos will not be assessed. • Each slide supports or refutes the thesis that progress has been made in the community since the Civil Rights era of the 1960s. Bulleted points are permitted next to photographs on slides, but explanatory notes are placed in the notes section of each slide. (2) TIPS ON HOW TO APPROACH AND ORGANIZE YOUR ASSIGNMENT: • Think carefully about your community and what changes may or may not have occurred Since the Civil Rights movements which may have affected groups such as: Ethnicities, women, handicapped, elderly, elected government officials, Town councils, school boards, types of businesses and restaurants, public art and murals, hospitals, public and private service agencies, religious groups and churches, sports groups and events, private and public recreational facilities. • You only need 4-8 examples. These can be buildings, signage, parks or photographs of people you may have obtained through community, public websites, archives of local newspapers, etc. You can even make photos of the local phone directory to illustrate 'change' in your community as a result of the Civil Rights Movements. Listings of churches, public or private agencies, for example. • Think of what would not be in your community if the Civil Rights Movement had not occurred. Then you will gain ideas of what you can photograph to illustrate change. • Some of you may live in communities which have not changed significantly in some areas or where there is evidence of 'institutional' or 'modern racism' existing. If you can find a way to convey these situations in your slides that is appropriate to the assignment. • You can photograph buildings, details of building structures, housing areas, roadways or anything else which by the addition of your comments in the NOTES SECTION of your slides you can provide explanation or detail. Assignment 2: IN WORD DOC In preparation for the unit 4 project, watch television for 30 minutes or watch about 30 minutes of any movie made within the last five years. What were the first five things that stand out to you as being a product of progress since the civil rights movement? Do not forget to reference the ideas in your response to the course materials or other resources that you consulted to answer this question.
