Instructions: Choose a topic for your essay and decide if your essay is going to be analytical or comparative. This topic must be related to an English speaking country or its culture. Remember that it is easier to write about something that you are interested in. If you cannot come up with a subject contact your teacher for suggestions. Your aim should be briefly and clearly stated, like these examples: The aim of this essay is to find out why the UK Government [...]. This essay aims to find out what the difference is between [X] and [Y]. The purpose of this essay is to find out how [X] will affect the UK/US/[...]. This essay will compare the British and the American [X]. What should your project plan include? 1. Introduction o Write down a short introduction of your chosen topic. 2. Aim o What is the aim of your essay? Make sure to connect the aim to an English speaking culture/context. o Define your essay. Are you going to write an analytical or a comparative essay? 3. Research questions o Include 2-3 questions. Make sure that the questions are connected to the aim. Research questions must be possible to find an answer to, and they cannot be yes-or-no questions. Do not answer your questions in your project plan. 4. Sources and criticism o Include at least two sources, independent of each other, that you intend to use to answer the research questions. It is important that you include all information on the sources and not just a link to a website. Articles online have authors and titles too! Also see the attached file below on how to write references. Your sources must be written in English. o What kind of sources has been chosen? o Why are they reliable and pertinent to your essay? Here is a comprehensible Formal language Just as in Formal Writing: an Argumentative Text, you should use formal language. This will require you to show variation in the language used by using a nuanced vocabulary. It is also important to remember that all words have to be written in their proper form (contractions are not allowed) and first person (I, us, we) and second person (you) should not be used. Sources and references: Since this is English 7, you are to show that you are able to find suitable sources written in English and evaluate their reliability. You must also be able to show in your text when you have borrowed information from a source - simply including a reference list is not enough since the information found in your sources should be the driving force behind the whole essay. In order to do this, you should use a reference system - preferably the Harvard or Oxford system. It is also important to remember that it is the information you find in your sources that should be the driving force in your main body of text.
