Introduction
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge to develop and maintain a positive and
productive workplace environment. It covers all aspects of employee relations impacting on managers at
the strategic level.
Instructions
Scenario
Due to your excellent reputation as an external HR consultant you have been contracted by the
organisation to set up their HR department. Until now, this company have not had an HR department;
instead each department manager has been responsible for looking after the HR duties themselves. Due to
recent expansion they now need your guidance. First and foremost it is essential to develop and implement
the necessary policies and procedures to manage employee relations.
Tasks
Part 1
The first step in managing employee relations is to have a clear understanding of the legislation that applies
to workplace relations.
Identify six areas of (IR) industrial relations law that affects business operations.
When devising organisational policies and procedures, how will you ensure alignment with the
strategic objectives of the organisation? Give two examples.
Part 2
In order to mitigate risk and minimise the likelihood of liability and negligence issues, you are required to
develop strategies and policies, which ensure compliance.
By implementing a risk management approach, explain how you intend to take into account the
objectives of relevant groups and individuals when implementing organisational strategies.

Part 3
The company has grown exponentially in the past twelve months and is looking to organise another
recruitment drive, to attract new employees as they continue to expand. In order to build and maintain a
productive organisational culture, it is essential that the company become known as an employer of choice.
In order to achieve this recognition, the organisation needs to excel in three key areas- to attract, motivate
and retain the best possible candidates. Explain in three key steps how the HR department will facilitate
this
Design an orientation and induction program (timeline) that;
• Identifies and address the needs of both the organisation and the new employee (with regards to
employee relation policies)
• Specifies the overall objectives of the program and how the program could be evaluated.
Your orientation and induction program outline should clearly indicate a sequence of events and activities
with an associated time line. (The timeline can be done in point form.)
Explain the effectiveness of your proposed induction schedule and the purpose behind each activity. What
do you hope to achieve through this program

Part 4
Despite all the policies and procedures that you have worked diligently to put into place, there are certain
events/situations and circumstances that can arise which require conflict resolution skills. In particular
issues surrounding diversity management.
Outline two different strategies, which encourage diversity within the workplace and promote its
benefits amongst the employees.
Suggest a strategy that you would implement in order to effectively manage situations, which
inhibit the organisation from meeting its diversity objectives, should conflict arise.

In the unlikely event that an employee relation’s issue was to arise, what strategies would be in place in

involved in a dispute or conflict that isn’t easily solved.
