Meaning of key words: • Overview - a short description of the contextual factor that provides general information about it, but there is no need to give extensive details. • Assess - to judge or decide the importance of the contextual factor. • Enhance - to improve the quality, effectiveness or outcomes of the business by using the contextual factor. • Practice - the actual application or use of the contextual factor in a business setting. • Relevant terms: words that are being used in this course such as governance principles, duties, innovation, learning organisation etc. • Contextual factors: are characteristics of the internal and external environment, such as legislation, risks, technological changes etc. • Concept: this is an abstract idea that someone has named and defined. For example, resilience is discussed in Topic 7. Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. Hamel and Välikangas, (2003) define it as continuous reconstruction (not just improvement) working on values, processes and behaviors. • Theory: is a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something. For example, research has found that developing resilience, can enhance an organisation’s ability to develop resources and capabilities to avoid or minimise organisational collapse and to reorganise in light of discontinuities associated with climate change and weather extremes.
