Assessment 2: Scoping Paper
Overview
Assessment description
The Scoping Paper is a formative and preparatory task for Assessment 3, the Critical Analysis. It builds
on the work undertaken in Assessment 1 by focusing critical reflection, analysis and scholarship on
EITHER the topic chosen for Assignment 1, OR a different topic that is relevant to your personal or
professional interests and experiences related to difference and diversity.
For this assessment you are required to:
1. Select a topic related to difference and diversity;
2. Select a theory and explain how it helps you develop a personal position in relation to your topic (300
words);
3. Develop an annotated bibliography relevant to your topic and theory (1200 words).
The scoping paper comprises the following elements:
STATEMENT OF TOPIC & THEORY: Clearly state your chosen topic and chosen theory.
RATIONALE: Explain how the theory enables you to think differently and meaningfully about the topic
and helps you develop a position in relation to it. The statement of topic and rationale will together
comprise approximately 300 words.
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRPAHY: Identify two papers relevant to the topic you have chosen and two
papers relevant to the theory (four papers in total). These papers will be different from the resources
used in Assessment 1 or those provided as course readings. For each paper, students should provide a
short summary (200 words each) and explain the relevance of the paper to the rationale (100 words per
paper). The annotated bibliography will inform your Critical Analysis (Assessment 3).
