Assignment title: Information
HSH111 Introduction to Public Health & Health Promotion
Assessment Task 2: Case Study Report
ASSESSMENT TASK 2 GUIDELINES
The rationale! (ie. why are we doing this?)
By successfully completing this assessment task, you will be able to:
use relevant theory and contemporary frameworks to explain the concepts and evolution of public
health and health promotion (ULO1);
describe global public health and health promotion responses to a range of health issues, and discuss
their effectiveness (ULO2);
locate sources of information relating to public health and health promotion; collect, collate and
analyse information from these sources to support ideas and arguments (ULO3); and
identify ethically-sound, evidence-based public health and health promotion recommendations in
consideration of diverse communities (ULO4)
In addition, according to the Australian Health Promotion Association, there exists a range of core
competencies that an entry-level health promotion practitioner should be able to demonstrate. This
assessment task will enable you to work towards some of these key competencies. These include
demonstrating knowledge of how to:
Locate, conduct and critically analyse relevant literature (includes peer reviewed and grey literature,
local, state and national strategic plans, and relevant area and organisational reports and policies);
Compile an epidemiological and socio-demographic picture of the geographical or community
population or setting of interest; and
Describe a range of strategies to promote health – for example, health education, advocacy, lobbying,
media campaigns, community development processes, policy development, legislation.

Assessment Task 2: Case Study Report
THE TASK OUTLINE
NOTE: These instructions should be considered in conjunction with the rubric (to be released by the
end of week 2)
Requirements: 1500-word written report (+/-10%)
Submission: Online via the AT2 CloudDeakin DropBox
Deadline: 9am Thursday 27 April, 2017
Weighting: 30% of your final grade
Please choose ONE of the following populations/regions and sign up on CloudDeakin
by the end of week 3:
Asylum Seekers in Canada
Young Māori Men in Aotearoa (New Zealand)
Young Women in Indonesia
For this task, you will present a case study on your chosen population group. You will demonstrate an
in-depth understanding of the key health issues for your chosen group in this region, describe some
recent research findings relevant to the group, as well as look at current public health and health
promotion action in the region targeting this group. This will include the following:
Present recent data (from the last 5 years, ie. from 2012 onward) to explore the current situation in
the region eg. in regard to at risk groups; health issues of concern etc. – this should be brief yet
comprehensive - let the data guide you here;
Identify one (1) health issue to discuss in detail eg. housing, access to health care, prevention
of violence, human trafficking, sexually transmitted illnesses, malaria etc. TIP: It’s easiest to choose the
one issue that is most significant for this group ie. the one that contributes the most to the burden of
disease or has the most impact on this community currently;
Discuss the findings from at least three (3) recent pieces of credible literature on this
community - these sources should be relevant to the key health issue you have chosen for this
population group – you will be led by the research here; you may choose to use peer-reviewed
journals, conference presentations, government or non-government organisation reports; theseHSH111 Introduction to Public Health & Health Promotion

sources must be published from 2012 onward; you may choose to use websites as well, however these
will be in addition to the above minimum of 3;
Present the key points from one (1) policy (eg. smoking bans in restaurants) or one (1) other
strategic document (eg. national mental health plan) relevant at a local level, explaining how this
document informs action on health issues of concern for your chosen group;
Identify at least two (2) organisations working in this space, briefly explaining their roles
promoting health in this context;
Make three (3) recommendations based upon the evidence you have found, for future public
health/health promotion action in this space.
And finally...
This paper will be presented using the structure above, even adding your own headings if you would
like to; you could also include subheadings if this helps you to organise and present your ideas more
clearly.
Further detail to be provided in a narrated PowerPoint on CloudDeakin by the end of week 2.
You may start researching for this assignment at any time.
We encourage you to bring your sources to class and ask your tutor about them! We can't tell you
whether to use them or not but we can certainly guide you by commenting on the quality and
credibility of those sources.
Good luck!
