Assessment Task
As an expert witness, you have been invited by your country’s governmental
committee to prepare a detailed submission on digital currencies to assist the
committee in its inquiries in its investigations into (1) how to develop an effective
regulatory system for digital currency; (2) the potential impact of digital currency
technology on the country’s economy; and (3) how the country can take advantage of

The submission must be in the form of a 3000 – 4000 word report and should contain
facts, opinions, arguments and recommendations.
The key issues to be addressed in your report are:
1. The need for a regulatory system for digital currency including:
a. Competing definitions for digital currencies
b. Regulatory approaches
c. The tax department’s current stance on Bitcoin and their current
guidelines and their implications
d. Combating the misuse of digital currencies
e. Consumer and business protections
f. Impact on innovation
2. The potential impact of digital currency technology on the country’s economy
including the:
a. Payments sector
b. Retail sector, and
c. Banking sector
3. How the country can take advantage of digital currency technology including:
a. Benefiting the country’s economy (such as tourism)
b. A stimuli for innovation
c. Catering for the unbanked

Students seeking extensions for any Assignment work must provide appropriate
documentation to support their request before the due date of the assignment (see

Compelling reason for an extension and the level of documentation that will be
needed).
An Assignment submitted after the due date without an approved extension of time
will be penalised. The penalty for late submission is a reduction by five percent (5%)
of the maximum Mark applicable for the Assignment, for each University Business
Day or part Business Day that the Assignment is late. An Assignment submitted more
than ten (10) University Business Days after the due date will have a Mark of zero
recorded for that Assignment.
The online submission system will accept late assignments up until 23:55pm
on the 10th University Business Day after the due date.
