Subject at a glance 1.1 Student participationrequirements The JCU Learning, Teaching and Assessment Policy (4.3) indicates that,“a 3 credit point subject will require a 130 hour work load of study-related participation including class attendance over the duration of the study period, irrespective of mode of delivery”. This work load comprises timetabled hours and other attendance requirements, as well as personal study hours, including completion of online activities andassessment requirements. Note that “attendance at specified classes will be a mandatory requirement for satisfactory completion of some subjects” (Learning, Teaching and Assessment Policy, 5.10); and that additional hours may be required per week for those students in need of English language, numeracy or other learning support. External study is study that does not require on-campus attendance but does require online attendance and participation. All other rules, guidelines and expectations apply. Assessment due dates, learner responsibility in terms of participation and engagement and independent learning skills are necessary.Getting Started: Find out more at the JCU Off-Campus Student Information website:https://www.jcu.edu.au/off-campus-students Key subject activities Time Day/ Date Room/ Location Lecture Content Videos Self-Directed Weekly LearnJCU Subject Site → Subject Materials Topic Readings Self-Directed Weekly Topic discussion boards Self-Directed Online Tutorial/Practical 6:00 – 7:00pm Wednesday15th Mar 2017 Blackboard Collaborate Online Tutorial/Practical 6:00 – 7:00pm Wednesday, 5th April 2017 Blackboard Collaborate Online Tutorial/Practical 6:00 – 7:00pm Wednesday3rd May 2017 Blackboard Collaborate 1.2 Key dates Key dates Date Census date see2017 Study Period and Census Dates Last date to withdraw without academic penalty see2017 Study Period and Census Dates Assessment task 1Ethics Essay(15%) Due17th March 2017 Assessment task 2 Editorial Task(30%) Due28th April 2017 Assessment task 3Final Exam(55%) Formal Examinations Period   Section 2. Subject details 2.1 Subject description This subject firstly introduces students to a foundation on ethics and what ethics actually means and then, by way of practical examples and case studies, builds an appreciation and understanding of good governance practice in modern organisations This subject is a core requirement for the Master of Business Administration 2.2 Course and Subject learning outcomes Asastudentitis importantfor youto understandhowthe courselearningoutcomesarebeingaddressedbythe subjectthoughspecificsubjectlearningthatyouaretoachieve.Thefollowingtableshowsthealignment betweenthelearningoutcomesatthecourseandsubjectlevel.Studentswhosuccessfullycompletethissubject willbeableto: SubjectLearningOutcomes 1) Evaluate the specific contents of recent reforms to corporate legislation and their implications for companies and stakeholders 2) Evaluate and apply the general principles of the professional code of conduct 3) Appraise the key role of professional ethics in maintaining the integrity of external financial reporting Course Learning Outcomes A2 Ethics: Exercise independent ethical judgment and initiative in solving differing business problems creatively S4b Written Communication: Present complex business analyses and information appropriately to differing audiences using clear and fluent written communication K2 Sustainable Business Performance: Evaluate contexts within which differing sustainable business performance methods should be integrated and applied S1 Application of Research Skills: Research and apply established concepts to solve business and professional practice problems Students who successfully complete this subject will be able to: 1). Critically evaluate a business decision from an ethical viewpoint when considering impacts on individual stakeholders 2). Design a system that will ensure alignment within an organisational structure to ensure long term sustainability. 3).Conduct in-depth research into a specific company and its problems These outcomes will contribute to your overall achievement of course learning outcomes. 2.3 Learning and teaching in this subject Directors’ responsibilities are not limited by law, but extend to the expectations of the many stakeholders in society, as a firm’s reputation can impact on long-term survival and prosperity. Although this subject focuses on larger firms, many of the issues raised and lessons learned in this subject are relevant to the small business owner who uses a company framework for his or her business. This subject builds an understanding of the responsibilities of board members and senior managers in today’s corporate environment. This will lead to an appreciation of the need for good corporate governance and the monitoring and controlling of business activities. Ethical standards and responsible practices are the cornerstone of good governance in modern organisations. This subject uses a combination of approaches to teaching and learning, including both student centred and teacher directed approaches. The content of the subject is disseminated using a variety of teaching strategies including case studies, discussions, and readings. At the beginning of each lecture, you will be made aware of the expected learning outcomes, how such outcomes are relevant to the world of business, and the resources that support the learning outcomes of this subject. You are expected to be an active participant in the learning process and are encouraged to undertake the weekly reading andactively participate in the discussion boards that are available to students for each topic. Beyond the ‘classroom’, your learning experience will be greatly enhanced if you collaborate and share ideas with other students. One easy way to achieve this is to form a study group with 2-3 other students with similar needs and expectations. You can do this using the topic discussion board. If you engage with other points of view while undertaking this subject, you will find it easier to analyse the different case studies. Not everyone thinks the same way. It is not a matter of changing your point of view, but clarifying why you think the way you do. It is not a question of convincing others that you are right and they are wrong. There is no assumption like that in this subject. Discussion helps everyone to see things more clearly. You will find subject materials, such as this outline, PowerPoints for the lecture and other reading materials on LearnJCU each week. The reading materials are the beginning of your learning experience. You are encouraged to read widelyutilising not only the academic literature, but also other media resources which surround the case studies we will discuss. As you read, you will be expected to be able to differentiate between more reliable and less reliable sources. Online Tutorials Online tutorials are the only real time source of communication in this subject. They provide the opportunity to consolidate and apply your knowledge and ask questions. Logging in to an online tutorial is through LearnJCU via the link provided under ‘Online Tutorials’ will open up Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. You will need the following in order to participate and fully benefit from the sessions.  Decent and reliable broadband internet connection.  Blackboard Collaborate Ultra is only supported in certain browsers, we currently recommend only using the latest version of Google Chrome browser a free download from: https://www.google.com.au/chrome/  A USB connected headset with microphone. Noise cancelling capabilities optional but preferable.  Webcam Email [email protected] if you need assistance. 2.4 Student feedback on subject As part of our commitment at JCU to improving the quality of our courses and teaching, we regularly seek feedback on your learning experiences. Student feedback informs evaluation of subject and teaching strengths and areas that may need refinement or change. YourJCU Subject and Teaching Surveys provide a formal and confidential method for you to provide feedback about your subjects and the staff members teaching within them. These surveys are available to all students through LearnJCU. You will receive an email invitation when the survey opens. We value your feedback and ask that you to provide considered feedback for each of your subjects. Students have found this subject interesting and challenging. In verbal discussion with a number of students in SP3 in 2015, the students expressed a desire to have more case study examples and discussions. I have ensured that case study development for this subject continues. Last year (2016) one student commented; “The group interaction/discussion.It gives us a chance todiscuss and digest the topic given.” While another said they liked the case studies as they “provided as illustrations for each topic.” This is also why you are encouraged to engage in the discussion sites for each topic. Other students commented that it was a challenging subject for a commencing student. I would agree and have attempted to supply the appropriate support to those students who are just beginning their MBA journey. The subject has been designed for students who are moving towards the completion of their MBA. Even though there are no prerequisites for this subject, its content is very much at a Master’s level and will be challenging for some students. 2.5 Subject resources and special requirements Prescribed Texts There are no prescribed texts for this subject. Further Reading Readings are given in the student workbook and various materials placed on the LearnJcu subject site.
