Maths and English Functional Skills:- Please use this Assignment to improve your Maths and English Functional Skills where appropriate.
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to acquire and apply relevant statistical techniques used in process quality control, and to evaluate a process against a given specification.
Aim
The aim of this assignment is to use STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES to analyse a set of VARIABLE MEASUREMENTS provided. The candidate can then relate the design specification to the process capability.
The OUTCOMES that are being tested by the assignment are listed below.
1 Investigate statistical techniques used in process control
2 Select data and construct process control charts based on variable inspection data
Assignment Brief.
Section A: SPC / Quality: THEORY
1. Describe SPC.
2. How would you use Statistical Process Control (SPC) to be most effective?
3. Evaluate the two basic types of inspection used in sampling for process control (P1.1)
4. Sigma is a measure of variation. With the aid of diagrams and using the normal distribution curve, describe the significance of natural and assignable causes of variation (P1.2)
5. What is “Goalpost Mentality”? Why does it give producers false hope that they are satisfying their customers? What is a better way of looking at your performance capability?(P3.1)
6. The quality journey has been associated with various champions/gurus, who have appeared in three distinct waves.
a) Describe the three waves, approximately when they occurred, their main focus and the champions/gurus associated with them.
b) Select one champion/guru from part a) and describe in detail his/her main message and contribution to quality.
Section B: SPC: IMPLEMENTATION
PART 1 INVESTIGATE TYPES OF VARIATION WITHIN A PROCESS
Using a computer application
1) The following variable results were obtained by taking samples of five (5) items at regular intervals.
PLEASE USE 50p DATA (SEPARATE DOCUMENT (NAMED: SPC Henley College Information.DOCX)
a) Construct control charts for the sample means and ranges charts showing the control limits
• Use the selected data to construct frequency distribution and calculate mean, range and standard deviation (P1.3)
• Select and group sample data based on variable inspection and calculate appropriate control chart limits (P2.1)
• Construct a control chart for variables (P2.2)
UCL = + A2 UCL R = D4
LCL = - A2 LCL R = D3
b) The specification asks for a tolerance of 280mm +/- 5mm. Calculate the process capability indices Cp and Cpk and comment on these. What level of process capability should you strive to achieve for Cp and Cpk. Evaluate the process against the quality requirement(P3.3)
Part 2: using a process control chart (please use attached chart, print in A3)
4 Customers are demanding higher levels of quality and you are requested to demonstrate your company’s ability by providing statistical process control charts from a pre-production trial. The customer’s specification is 10 mm with a tolerance of ± 0.5 mm.
Below are 10 samples taken at regular periods. Each sample contains five observations.
PLEASE USE 50p DATA (SEPARATE DOCUMENT (NAMED: SPC Henley College Information.DOCX)
a) Check the data for normality and comment. Why?
Comment on the results by relating the characteristics of the normal curve to the distribution of the means of small samples (P1.4)
b) Construct the mean ( ) and range (R) charts and comment. (P1.3)
UCL = + A2 UCL R = D4
LCL = - A2 LCL R = D3
c) Calculate and comment on the process capability indices Cp and Cpk. What actions do you think you need to take before full production starts? (P3.1)
PASS ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
Unit 36: SPC:
Pass criteria covered within this assignment is listed below.
1 Investigate statistical techniques used in
P1.1 evaluate the two basic types of inspection used in sampling for process control
P1.2 describe the significance of natural and assignable causes of Variation
P1.3 use selected data to construct frequency distribution and calculate mean, range and standard deviation
P1.4 relate the characteristics of the normal curve to the distribution of the means of small samples
2 Select data and construct process control charts
P2.1 select and group sample data based on variable inspection and calculate appropriate control chart limits
P2.2 construct a control chart for variables
3 Relate design specifications to process capability
P3.1 describe process capability
MERIT CRITERIA
In addition to the Pass criteria you are also given the opportunity to cover Merit criteria:
Identify and apply strategies to find appropriate solutions (M1)
M1 requires you to use an effective approach to study, research is to be applied, and from this research effective judgements have to be made
Select/design and apply appropriate methods/techniques (M2)
M2 requires you to use a range of methods and techniques which really quite relates strongly to this assignment as you are required to produce the relevant calculations (controls limits) and then plot these in a suitable format have been applied then from these charts you will need to make comments.
Present and communicate appropriate findings (M3)
A logical and clear process has been used within the assignment tasks, all calculations and control charts are clearly displayed and presented.
