2. You found medication tucked under Mike’s pillow.
3. Raelene refused to wear her glasses.

1. How will you respond to Anton’s behaviour to demonstrate effective communication and problem-solving/negotiation strategies?
2. How will you address Anton’s cultural differences?
3. As Anton’s behaviour continues to escalate, how can you respond
assertively to ensure personal safety for yourself and Anton?
4. What actions would you need to take after this exchange and over the next week in order to comply with the organisation policies and procedures? Prepare a brief incident report with one entry immediately after the incident and a follow up entry during the week to update the report.

Case Study – “Anton”
You are a support worker in a youth refuge. You have the task of monitoring the young residents doing their weekly jobs on a Sunday afternoon. There is a rule at the refuge that jobs have to be completed at the designated time. If they aren’t the resident has an incident report written up under the Discipline Policy and this will then lead to the removal of privileges such as choosing TV programs, watching TV, going out etc.
Anton has been at the refuge for nearly two months and is due to leave in one week. He has had a relationship with one of the female residents but they have been arguing lately and she says she doesn’t want to keep in touch with him after he leaves the refuge. When Anton was first at the refuge he used to lose his temper regularly yelling at the support workers and other residents. He has learnt other ways to deal with his frustrations like expressing his feelings and taking 10 minutes time out in his room. Anton’s parents are Egyptian and in his family it is the female who do all the housework.
Anton’s job for the week is to clean the bathroom and toilet. He’s sitting watching TV when all the other residents are doing their allocated jobs. You remind him that he has been rostered on to clean the bathroom and toilet. He says “I will - but not right now. I really want to see the end of this TV program. Anyway that’s women’s work!” You remind Anton of the House Rules (Discipline Policy) but he says he’s had enough of staying in this “stupid refuge”. You can see that he is starting to become aggressive.
