Learning Outcome
It is expected that students will be able to demonstrate their level of knowledge and understanding
of Value Management (VM) and the ability to apply VM concepts to a real life project scenario.
Brief
You are required to identify a real life construction project (either proposals stage, being built or
completed) bearing in mind you would be in a position to have reasonable access to overall project
data (required to perform VM). You should be in a position to clearly understand the project and key
details of the project including (but not limited to) type of building (or structure), location, overall
cost, primary and secondary project objectives, key stakeholders, design details (size – area, plan
shape, height, specification etc.), among others. You are required to apply VM to the selected
project (or a component or element of the construction project selected). The application of VM can
be at Value Planning, Value Engineering or Value Analysis stage depending on the nature and state
of the development of the design. You may use any approach to VM in executing and applying VM
principles to the project. This assignment should demonstrate your understanding of VM principles
and its application to projects and is written in a manner to showcase the use of VM in construction
projects as a way to improve value characteristics of the project.
You are generally expected to follow through the following process identified.
Identify an application area (whole project, building, structure, element, component etc.)
and define the objectives of applying VM. i.e. explain what do you want to achieve through
application of VM.
Explain the process of VM application clearly going through the stages of the Job Plan (in
VM). Explain in detail how each stage is executed and apply techniques required.
You are required to provide:
o Project brief
o Problem analysis
o Alternative solutions considered
o Critical evaluation of alternative solutions
o Use of value matrix, FAST or SMART or other appropriate technique
o Detailed development of the solution
o Final proposal recommendation
o Analysis of benefits and risks
o Implementation plan Bachelor of Construction Management

You are required to write a final report incorporating all of the above aspects. The report
would be appropriately referenced and produced in a professional manner as a professional
report to be presented to the building client of the project.
The full report should also include a short literature review indicating relevant literature on
VM and providing information to justify the use of VM in improving value characteristics of
the project concerned.
Demonstrate the use (or knowledge) of using the Australian /New Zealand Standard
(AS4183: 2007 Value Management) and also compare with NSW Treasury Value
Management process.
Approach
You are required to form your own groups of 5 and report to the lecturer as to the formation of your
group. Detailed instructions of how you report group formation will be provided to you at the time
of handing of the assignment.
Submission Requirements
The final report should be submitted via Turnitin on the due date.
