Assignment 2
Developing a Business Case for SFO Airport
Due date: Friday the 5th of May 2017 at 11:59 pm Sydney Time
Weight: 30%
Word limit: 3500 words maximum (strict limit)
Individual/Group: Group Assignment
Purpose
Development of Business Case for the San Francisco Airport.
Case Study
Refer to the same case study used in Assignment 1:
(San Francisco International Airport and Quantum Secure's SAFE for Aviation System: Making the
Business Case for Corporate Security).
Case Background:
This case chronicled how the San Francisco International Airport (commonly referred by its three-
letter airport code, SFO) in 2008 had announced a 383 million plan to renovate and reopen Terminal
2. The team, working under the director of aviation security, had selected and recommended
Quantum Secure’s SAFE software suite as the new Terminal 2 credentialing system to be
implemented. It has been a resounding success. Now it's time to decide where to go next.
Opportunity for further IT investment:
Going forward, SFO considers what should be the next steps in their digitization strategy.
Where should the airport direct its technology investment dollars?
How can SFO stay at the forefront of airport innovation to become a truly innovative airport
of the future?
SFO’s CEO has considered this very question and has decided to focus on one major area - wireless
technology. Clear benefits, such as the revenue generated from selling Wi-Fi access to passengers,
are easy for the management team to notice. But are there other less obvious benefits? What about
a range of savings that wireless technologies bring to the table? Are there new services that wireless
could enable such as tracking passenger movements, wireless EFTPOS payments at retail outlets,
facilitating internal airport communications, better security and so on? Your team has now been
tasked with the job of exploring benefits of wireless technology then deciding in which form they
might be integrated into the airport. Senior management is not aware that wireless could offer
airport operators much more than just the ability for passengers to check their email. First step in
convincing the management of your vision is to produce a business case. M I S 7 8 2 - A S S I G N M E N T 2 2
Your Assignment:
As the head technology adoption team your job is to write a convincing business case that provides
sound argumentation for investing in wireless technology to reach SFO Airport’s business objectives.
The business case should be aimed at the senior executive team at SFO. You are to produce a
business case guided by the 6-step “Framework for Business Cases” outlined during the live support
sessions (This will also be covered in Course 4, Week 2 on FutureLearn).
Delving deeper into the business case framework, the 4th step mentions analysis of various options
identified in the previous step. Under normal circumstances a detailed analysis of all options would
be carried out. Due to time constraints, you are only expected to perform a detailed analysis of
your one chosen option in step 4 of the framework.
