Task description Due date:  11.55pm, 4 May 2017 Format: 1. 10 minute video (use your mobile phone or book a time in the One Button Studio at Bundoora campus) uploaded to LMS site via link 2. Provide complete reference list showing all your sources of information, ideas and data. Use APA6 referencing style (refer to www.lib.latrobe.edu.au/referencing-tool/apa-6). 3. Provide coversheet showing: Title and number of assessment task, date, your name, your ID number, your La Trobe email address, subject title and code, number of words. Instructions Purpose: To understand the determinants of health in Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and youth, and critically examine strategies used to improve health outcomes in these populations over the past 50 years and their impacts. Topic: For this assignment, you will research and prepare a 10-minute video (equivalent to a 1500 word essay) on the following topic: The federal Minister for Health has received the ninth Closing the Gap Report and is concerned that, in spite of good intentions and significant funding by successive governments, Australia is not on track to close the gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and other Australians by 2031 (Commonwealth of Australia, 2017). The Minister is particularly concerned about the mixed record of success in meeting the health targets set, the entrenched inequalities in health outcomes and the long-term implications of this for the health and wellbeing of Indigenous populations. Your team has been appointed to investigate the question: Why do Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations still experience significant health inequalities in Australia? Page 2 of 4 Approaching the task: You will include consideration of this quote in your video: "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health is viewed in a holistic context, that encompasses mental health and physical, cultural and spiritual health. Land is central to wellbeing. Crucially, it must be understood that when the harmony of these interrelations is disrupted, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ill health will persist." (Department of Health, 2016) You will also identify and critically review three or more strategies that have been used to improve the health of Indigenous children and youth in Australia over the past 50 years. Resources and originality: Aim to produce an original piece of work and commentary. So that you are not overwhelmed with information, think carefully about what you are trying to find before heading off on a search. As Covey says, 'Start with the end in mind'. The video is short, so to ensure you cover all information required, showing how your points relate to research. Utilise the wealth of scholarly resources from the peer reviewed literature as well as government and other reports (the 'grey literature'). These are accessible through LTU library catalogue and databases. Some selected resources are accessible through the Reading List. When you draw on these resources, it is important that you do not quote large sections from them. As noted above, aim to produce an original piece of work in which you communicate with your own 'voice' by using your own words. Do NOT rely on materials sourced from the internet without reviewing them critically. Many are simply not reliable sources for academic research. For example, anyone can contribute information to Wikipedia and their expertise is not taken into consideration. You must properly acknowledge all sources of data, information, examples and ideas in your Reference List. Refer to the LTU library website for information on referencing (www.lib.latrobe.edu.au/referencing- tool/apa-6) or attend training sessions. We have no choice but to report evidence of academic integrity breaches and these are investigated by relevant colleagues. You might also wish to consider contacting a representative of the population group under consideration or a leader in the field of research or practice related to your topic to discuss their perspectives on their topic. They are likely to have views on, for example, the state of the knowledge base related to your topic. Marking: Your work will be assessed against the marking criteria below. Please read these carefully to make sure you understand what is required. Any questions? Questions are welcome and are important to ensure you know what is expected.
