Choosing Formal and Informal Assessments Chapter 7 focuses on assessment of reading s******s using standardized tests, informal reading inventories, observation, and teacher-made tests. For this assignment, you will be assigned one of the assessment types listed below. Your instructor will set up a Google Classroom assignment with each of the types of assessments. For your assigned assessment, summarize the kinds of information that you would get from that type of procedure. Comment on posts from each of the other assessment types. The four procedures are: achievement and diagnostic tests curriculum-based assessments informal reading inventories teacher-created procedures Choosing Assessment Procedures Based on Referral Information In this forum you will choose assessment procedures based on a student referral profile. Specifically, imagine that the student referred for an assessment is in the third grade. Her teacher reports that she is not able to do grade-level work and wonders what level of reading material to give her. When she is reading the teacher notices a lot of difficulty with decoding and word recognition. Her reading is slow and non-automatic. Identify the stage of reading that this student is operating at, and indicate what kinds of assessments you would choose in order to determine her reading profile and intervention needs. In your replies to your peers, discuss similarities and successes/failures you've had using certain types of assessments mentioned by your classmates. Activity One: Assessment Decision Matrix This assignment needs to be submitted to both Engage (below) and Taskstream. In this activity, you will develop a guide for selection of tests and assessment procedures to answer important questions about students referred for evaluation of possible reading disability. I think you will find that, when completed, the matrix will be very useful to you in your role as a diagnostician. For each of the questions below, list the tests or informal procedures you would use, and indicate what level of reliability and validity would be expected. If psychometric qualities do not pertain to a particular procedure, e.g., portfolios or classroom observations, indicate NA (not applicable). Keep in mind, however, that although IRIs are called “informal reading inventories,” they are standardized and should have acceptable psychometric qualities to be used. When you complete your matrix, you will have a valuable resource for answering the following questions: How does this student compare on national norms? Does he/she qualify for special education services in reading? How does he/she perform on grade-level materials? What level of reading materials does this student need in order to be successful? What is this student's reading profile? Use the videos as well as your readings as resources for this assignment. I'll post the course syllabus to see the writing rubric.
