Assessment Details and Submission Guidelines Unit Code MN504 Unit Title Networked Applications Management Assessment Type Individual Assignment with group work component Assessment Title Protocol Analysis and Network Performance Measurement using Wireshark Purpose of the assessment (with ULO Mapping) This assignment is designed to develop deeper analytical understanding of different distributed network conditions. At the completion of this assessment students should be able to: a) Use various technologies and techniques for networked application m anagement, deployment and performance tuning. b) Describe important networked application architectures and technologies. c) Analyse performance and deployment related issues for networked applications d) Employ industry relevant tools and techniques for managing networked applications Weight 15% Total Marks 50 Word limit 2000 Due Date Week 7 Submission Guidelines • All work must be submitted on Moodle by the due date along with a completed Assignment Cover Page. • The assignment must be in MS Word format, 1.5 spacing, 11-pt Calibri (Body) font and 2 cm margins on all four sides of your page with appropriate section headings. • Reference sources must be cited in the text of the report, and listed appropriately at the end in a reference list using IEEE referencing style. • The report should be 5 to 6 pages and submitted on Moodle on time. Extension • If an extension of time to submit work is required, a Special Consideration Application must be submitted directly to the School's Administration Officer, in Melbourne on Level 6 or in Sydney on Level 7. You must submit this application three working days prior to the due date of the assignment. Depending on the seriousness of the case, penalties can vary from a written warning or zero marks to exclusion from the course or rescinding the degree. Students should make themselves familiar with the full policy and procedure available at: http://www.mit.edu.au/about-mit/institute-publications/policies- procedures-and-guidelines/Plagiarism-Academic-Misconduct-Policy- Procedure. For further information, please refer to the Academic Integrity Section in your Unit Description. Assignment Description This assignment, detailed below, is designed to develop deeper analytical understanding of different distributed network conditions. This exercise will provide opportunity to learn underlying inherent mechanisms of networked application protocols. It has scope to do comparative study between different network conditions to ensure load balancing and QoS. This exercise provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate analytical ability of evaluating distributed systems performance, Quality of Service and service management. Overview and General instructions of Assignment Your tutor will allocate a protocol to you from Table 1 on random selection basis. Download the Wireshark trace file from given Hyperlink for the allocated protocol and use Wireshark to analyse the trace for QoS and overall performance. Prepare a report which should address the following: • How the protocol works, including its strengths and weaknesses? • Analysis of the traffic in the trace, using the appropriate features in Wireshark to identify level of QoS and overall performance of the protocol in given traces. • The student also pair with another student who is working in the same topic group and compare data to identify best and worst performance in terms of QoS and overall performance.
