Details of Assignment A are in a separate document. Assignment B: Taking business forward: Details of Assignment B are below Together these comprise 100% of the assessment for this module, with a weighting of 30% for Assignment A and 70% for Assignment B. Both assignments are compulsory in the sense that the module cannot be passed unless both are completed. Each assignment has a separate deadline submission, such that Assignment A is completed during the timetabled module learning period and Assignment B is completed after the end of the timetabled learning period. See module leader for dates; these may vary depending on your mode of study. Assignment B: Taking Business forward You have two options for this assignment – the first is more practical and may be more suitable if you are currently in work whilst studying this module (i.e you can address a specific problem or issues in your workplace), the second option is more theoretical. You are free to choose, Assignment Option 1: For this assignment you are to write as a manager/decision maker of your chosen organisation. You have been asked by the board of directors to improve the environmental credentials of your organisation – this could be either by direct environmental interventions, improvements or integrating of environmental factors into your area of responsibility. Specifically you have been asked to present a management report to the board and this is the form this assignment takes. You must choose one specific area, review a particular environmental challenge (or opportunity) and develop a business case for how to address the challenge and avoid ‘business as usual’. This assignment is an opportunity for you to apply the information and issues raised in this module to a specific business case and take into account both the theoretical ideals and the practical ‘real-life’ constraints and context that business faces and operates in. In completing this assignment you should consider issues of organisational learning and change management, scenario planning and strategy. This assignment is to help you engage with the whole breadth of material in Green Business but especially Unit 3, which has explored some of the options available for businesses in responding to the environmental challenge, and Unit 4 that raises questions about strategy and the future direction of business. The form of this assignment should take that of a management report rather than an academic essay, however normal referencing rules apply and you will expected to appropriately reference your arguments and demonstrate awareness of relevant literature. The structure should include: • An executive summary; • An outline of the organisational context; • The extent of the problem; • A clear proposal of your solution along with analysis of risks; • Recommendations and implementation plan. Use appendices to include additional charts, illustrations and data as necessary. Appendices should be no longer than 5 pages in total. Explain any figures you include. You should use a font of size no less than 10 points. Assignment Option 2: Where next for business? – Critically assess the future for business and sustainability in the light of the VW scandal and the assertion by Wright and Nyberg (2015) that business, underpinned by capitalist models of growth, are on a course for self-destruction. You are to follow a standard academic structure whereby you introduce the context of the VW scandal, critically review the concept of corporate environmentalism and reflect on the future of business. Notes and Guidance Your report or essay should be no less that 3000 words and no more than 4000. Deliverables to be submitted for assessment: 1 assessment How the work will be marked: Assessment will be based on the extent to which the learning outcomes listed above have been met, and the extent to which the above instructions, notes and guidance are complied with (for example regarding word limit, style, structure, referencing and citation, etc.).  To achieve a marginal pass of 50% to 54%: you should select appropriate documents and use these to address the assignment; demonstrate a grasp of the material sufficient to enable a basic response to the task; demonstrate some ability to engage in critical appraisal; demonstrate some appreciation of appropriate presentation, citation and logical structure.  To achieve a pass of 55% to 59%: you should produce a coherent response to the task undertaken demonstrating a sound understanding of how the documents relate to the sustainable development debate; demonstrate clear evidence of skills of critical appraisal; demonstrate good appreciation of appropriate presentation, citation and logical structure, and adhere to the notes and guidance provided with this assignment.  To achieve a good pass of 60% to 69%: you might, for example, select interesting documents or an interesting mix of documents and demonstrate an ability to synthesise material and to construct responses which reveal good skills of critical analysis and insight; also a very good level of presentation, citation and logical structure, also careful and thoughtful adherence to the notes and guidance provided with this assignment.  To achieve an excellent pass of 70% or greater you must demonstrate an authoritative insight, critical analysis or synthesis of ideas in your critical appraisal of the selected documents, demonstrate a very good level of presentation, citation and logical structure, and carefully and thoughtfully meet the assignment requirements as described in this document.  Work failing to meet the above criteria will be awarded an outright fail of 44% or less. A marginal fail of 45% to 49% may be awarded to work with sufficiently sound structure to suggest that with further work it would be worthy of a pass.
