Education for Sustainable Development
‘Sustainable Development’ has been significant topic in the schools around the world after United Nation declared 2005- 2014 as the decade for Education for Sustainable Development. UN Decade (2005) affirmed, “Change towards a better quality of life starts with education”. The wholesome curriculum of sustainable development has momentous impacts in shaping of the natural environment. Nayar (2013) stated, “Education for Sustainable Development means adopting a more holistic approach to education with the aim of ‘creating a better world for this generation and future generations of all living things on planet Earth”. She further added, “This allows every child to acquire the knowledge, s******s, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future”.
The holistic nature of the Bhutanese school curriculum places ‘Environmental Education’ as a fundamental area of focus towards achieving a nation’s goal of environmental sustainability. To sustain our environment it is must to cultivate the mindset or attitudes in youths by encouraging sustainable lifestyles through education. Thus, the Bhutanese education curriculum incorporates key environmental challenges like climate change into core subjects like Science and Arts. During winter vacation sustainable related education program are held for the teachers to upgrade the knowledge and s******s. The School Agriculture program (SAP) and the introduction of the optional subject ‘Agriculture’ was introduced mainly to impart knowledge and s******s where students are encouraged to value organic farming as well as improve the yield production.
Nonetheless, value clashes between what students learn in the school and what they experience out in the community is viewed as a barrier to the achievement of our educational expectation of environmental sustainability. The attitude of most students towards addressing environment issues is not felt to be impressive. The uncaring actions demonstrated by illiterate people in the community are looked upon as a model by our youths. Thus, this has left them with a confused mind of their role towards environment.
Besides, the Bhutanese education policy also mandates school to provide environmental sustainability education through different approaches including non-academic activities. The idea of “Green School for Green Bhutan” was to promote knowledge on preservation and sustainable mobilization of natural environment where activities like beautification of garden, Plastic Day (learners and teachers are not allowed to use anything related to plastic item), picture talk, Green Day, quiz, speech, extemporary and essay regarding preservation and protection of environment are carried out by every school across the country. Club like Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN), UNESCO and Waste management in calculate the values of 3R (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) in students and also send the message of environmental sustainability to the community by the activities like cleaning campaign in community, water source cleaning, culture program on the awareness which the community are not aware off.
Though schools have been performing well in imparting environmental sustainability to students yet they have not been able to reach out to larger community, as schools are not getting much support from the community.
In the light of the priorities and limitations in relation to sustainability education in Bhutanese school, I personally feel that there is a greater scope for the expansion and promotion of such valued issues in our educational context. Greater progress can be made in this field by working collaboratively with the communities, government and schools in our goal towards producing the environmental caring citizens for the welfare of this planet.
