Further description of Assessment 1
Part A
Literature review
Students should demonstrate his/her critical thinking by challenging tradition of marketing practices. Critical thinking enables us to become more creative by blending different theories in a particular case questioning the limitation of current marketing practice. Marketing system and community engagement/community brand are such kind of emerging theories that answer many underlying assumptions behind techniques, goals and values applied in understanding marketing implication in our society.
Sample of a literature review
Identification is an integral characteristic to understanding any brand community (Genfield; 2006). An individual perceives themselves to be “stereotypically interchangeable with other group members” whilst remaining distinctly different from outside participants (Charya & Ken; 2003). It is important to note that such identification with brand community is the fundamental determinant of individual community member behavior (Klgesh, Kia & Mann; 2005).
In the above example, a student is explaining the role of ‘identification’ as a factor to engage in groups, which can be considered as pivotal in defining brand community. Students are advised to put up an argument based on theories rather than own judgement or ideas. Of course, it is welcome in later part of the report but not under literature review. It is strictly applied exploring implication of theories in real business environment.
Students should investigate three major theoretical fields in the case of Milo cricket program. Each theory should have at-least 4 academic references and strictly show the citation in the report. It is a common misunderstanding of few students that they avoid in-text citation but add all these in the reference list.
Event sequencing map
After providing a literature on theories students need to draw a table on event sequencing map. Events sequencing map enables students to capture events from any sources- academic and non-academic. Each event requires a brief description so that the reader can clarify the event. The collection of events will make up a case of Milo cricket. The quality of the case is fully dependent on how sincere and hardworking one student is in collecting data from various sources. It has been observed from the previous students is that various you-tube and web-site data were considered. Some have gathered photographs from magazine/newspaper/trade journals etc. Finally, a theory (may be more than one in some cases) needs to be selected for each event. A sample of event sequencing map is shown below
Table: Event sequencing map.
Event. Description of the event. Relevance to the marketing system and community engagement theories.

Time: 00:30 – 01:50 Coordinator and parent describing about the introduction of Milo Cricket in the local club and participation as parent and coordinator. Theory of reciprocity. Parent is actively participating to give back in return of the activity Milo cricket has provided for kids.
In the above table, a you-tube video case is considered. A particular time range is selected, which the author thinks most relevant to the theories- reciprocity, marketing system and community engagement. A description is included as well. There could be few events (depending on the case) in a table. It is a unique way to apply critical thinking in a particular case. Students will be able to link theories in a real life case. Please note that, it is not essential to elaborate the theories in the event sequence map.
Theoretical framework in popplet map
After drawing the table, students are now in suitable situation to decorate his/her theoretical thoughts into a map. A sample is mentioned below
In this case, a framework is drawn in order to explore camping trip, and the author is selected four concepts (location, supplies, weather condition, and activities). Each of these concepts is then elaborated by more variables. For example: it can be suggested that mountain with lake and ocean are the two important variables while selecting location for camping trip. Students are expecting to draw a popplet map in which events and theories are selected in order to give meaning to creative thinking. In other words, popplet is a snapshot of events and theories which shows connections and meanings.
Explain and justify theoretical framework
After drawing the popplet map, students need to justify the connections drawn in the map. It gives the opportunity to demonstrate the critical thinking. Student should be vigilant explaining connections between the topic (the black box in the map), concepts (the blue boxes in the map) and variables (pink boxes in the map).
While focus is given to describe connections in words, it is pivotal to consider careful selection of words so that word limit can be managed successfully.
Note: Please go through the marking criteria in details before developing the draft.
