Introduction Electronic Health Records also called EHR, refers to digitized versions of paper-based medical files. Digital medical records are cloud-based, meaning that the information entered into the EMR software is stored in secure, remote servers to ensure privacy of the patient and system reliability. The patient information stored in the EHR is secure and password protected, this information can be edited by medical practitioners and other staff from the health care organization through their respective logins. My Health Record (Carter, 2008) My Health record is an EHR based application to collect and save medical information of an individual from multiple health care organizations in Australia. The health related information of an individual is collected from multiple health care organizations across Australia through an online portal and integrated to other clinical systems to provide medical information of the individual across all health care organizations. Components (Accidentalspeculationcom, 2017) Patient Management Component It’s the basic component for patient registration, admission, transfer and discharge. This includes information such as demographics, insurance information, etc. When a patient is registered under My Health record, a unique ID will be allotted. This ID can be used to track the patient health information across multiple health care organizations. Clinical Component Clinical component stores clinical information related to the patient such as history of physical consults, discharge summaries and medical prescriptions. Clinical component collects information related to the medication undergone by the patient. Laboratory Component Laboratory Component stores information related to the tests and results undergone by the patient. The results are converted into readable digital format and stored online for reference. Billing Component The billing component captures date related to all expenses incurred during medical care and can be used to generate insurance claims. My Health Record helps track and provides complete medical information across entire Australia. Every user for EHR is provided with their own password and access to patient information is provided as per the designation of the user. Problems As the medical information is sent and received through the internet, it would be a tiresome process to set up across rural areas. The cost incurred to implement My Health Records along with training and infrastructure is very expensive and may not be possible to implement at small facilities. The concept of My Health Records may not be accepted by all users across health care departments and patients which may cause delay in implementation. The workflow of My Heath Records must be configured as per the facilities provided by the health organization and becomes a tedious process to setup for every organization. Every user at the medical facility must be trained on the usage of My Health Records, which makes it a very long and tiresome process. Tackling privacy concerns is a problem at the initial stages as, patient information is at stake. Capabilities (Tang, 2014) Retrieval of patient demographics, medical history, current medications, allergies and diagnoses for better care health care management. Provide previous lab reports from a different health care provider across all locations Aid in decision making by providing details of treatments undergone at all health care organizations. Secure, effective exchange of data among health care colleagues and other accomplices takes into consideration coherence and fulfillment of care, enhances persistent wellbeing and nature of care and empowers general wellbeing observation Provide healthcare details upon request of the patient, leads to better self care. Generate insurance claims when requested by the health care department or the patient. Benefits Implementation of My Health Records leads to less paperwork and reduction in storage issues as the files are available on cloud upon login. Instant update of patient information leads to better health care management raising the quality of care. My Health Records provides a streamlined workflow of medical tasks, thereby improving the efficiency and productivity of the health care department. The need to visit clinics for medical prescriptions is minimized as doctors can change the prescription online. Integration of My Health Records across all health departments minimizes human effort thereby leading to better healthcare management. References 1. Accidentalspeculationcom.
