Please read the following Practice Scenario.
“Fernando and Rosa”
• Fernando (40) and Rosa (39) and their 3 teen-age children came to Australia from El Salvador five years ago under the Special Humanitarian Program.
• Fernando, who was an engineer in his home country, has a fair command of the language. He now works as a Teacher’s Assistant during the day and a Cleaner at night. Rosa, a trained primary school teacher, still has difficulties expressing herself in English. She is a Process Worker at a factory in Adelaide.
• Rosa approached a social worker at STTARS through an interpreter provided by the agency. She said she ‘was having difficulties with her 16 year old daughter Ana and has been unsuccessful in handling the situation.
• Ana is not doing well academically at school and had been reported twice this term for missing school without permission. According to Rosa, Ana was an ‘A’ student back in El Salvador and where she used to be lively and happy but here she has become withdrawn.
• Her younger brother and sister still seem to be close to Ana and they occasionally all go out together and interact with each other at home. But Ana does not seem to have friends of her own.
• Rosa tried to discuss the situation with her but Ana ended up walking away angry and saying she didn’t want to talk about anything. She was concerned that if Ana did not finish high school she would become a factory Process Worker like herself.
• Rosa mentioned how tired she had been feeling these past months and that lately she had not been sleeping well. She waits for Fernando to get but he is often late and not in a good mood when he finally arrives home.
• When Rosa gets to sleep she often has the same recurring dream which wakes her up and makes it difficult for her to go back to sleep.
• In the dream she is trying to swim across the river. (She recognises the river as the one where she used to swim as a child). As she approaches the other side, the riverbank moves farther and farther away. There are other swimmers, (she doesn’t recognise them) but they don’t hear her. She wakes up sweating.
