Thesis paper Exploring jaywalking and distracted walking behavior at intersections Jaywalking, aided by pedestrian distractions due to mobile phone use, is leading to fatalities and serious injuries of pedestrians in Victoria. Around 196 pedestrians had been killed on Victoria's roads over the past five years, with distraction and jaywalking emerging as a major factor. Furthermore, in a police operation targeting jaywalking in the Melbourne CBD last year, following a pedestrian fatality at Collins Street, there were 561 jaywalking violations issued during a 19-day period. Also, a recent survey by VicRoads shows that 50 per cent of motorists responded that the habit most affecting their driving is pedestrians crossing the road without looking. The goal of this project is to improve the safety of the people by reducing the jaywalking and distracted walking behaviour of pedestrians at intersections. It will develop, test and evaluate theory and evidence-based on-site communications to change the attitudes, intentions and behaviours of pedestrians. Besides the definition of Jaywalking and rules/regulations regarding Jaywalking, please try to examine following items in your literature review: • Identify the factors that influence pedestrian behavior, focusing on pedestrian safety and jaywalking at intersections • Explore distracted walking behaviour at intersections. • Determine how the factors identified influence pedestrian behavior • Review suitable theory and models to design on-site communication tools • Review the evidence on the effectiveness of communications in changing road user behaviours Literature review is critical to synthesise the existing knowledge in a particular field and also to identify the knowledge gaps. As such, proper thought needs to go into systematically synthesising the information that you learnt from the existing literature. You can make good use of tables, graphs etc. to better understand the information that you collected. For example, I have attached a conference paper where you can see systematic presentation of the information from literature review in a table format (refer Table 2 of the paper). Although the topic is not directly related to what you are doing, I want you to focus on how the information was presented on a systematic way. By looking at such tables, it is easier to understand what were the key findings from the existing literature and what have been less studied. This is just an example. You will find many literature review papers in engineering journal data base and learn how to systematically present the information on your own words (please pay attention to plagiarism and present the information on your own words with appropriate citation of the source as necessary). I hope you will develop such tables or other creative way of presenting your information from your literature review.
