Assignment #2 Brief:
Social media platforms have seen the proliferation of automated software agents known as “bots”, which monitor and often participate in simple online communication. The scale of bot activity is remarkable, with bots being responsible for 24% of all activity on Twitter and being behind 48.5% of all web traffic in 2015. The purpose of this assessment is to design, build and evaluate the impact of your own bot on social media.
You are required to select a particular context for your bot to operate with; this could be PR and marketing; public relations; politics and activism; countering abuse and othering; entertainment or television. You should present a validation for your bot in one of these contexts, including a brief validation of its ethics and behaviour, and a design for how it will operate (15%).
Then, focusing on Twitter as a platform, you should implement your bot and set it operating ‘in-the-wild’. You should capture appropriate usage and analytics data for your bot and draw out a set of observations and discussion regarding its deployment and any lessons learned. This analysis should also be supported by reference to relevant literature. (35%).
