MGT2OBE – Assessment 3 Instructions Overview of the Assessment The group assignment is to summarise and evaluate a current OB topic. The group assignment will be presented as a poster and portfolio during Week 11. An individual component is due the following day. Specific Instructions 1. Work as a group to research and assigned OB topic, provided by your workshop facilitator. Research the topic, using both the academic literature and the practitioner literature. There will be some time allocated during workshops to work on the group assignment, but some work will be completed outside of class. The group should maintain copies of specific meeting materials to include in the group portfolio (see further description below). 2. Work as a group to prepare a poster and portfolio to be presented in workshops, Week 11. The group poster should clearly and concisely summarise the topic and your group’s research. All group posters will be presented as part of a poster session during workshops in Week 11. All group members should be present for the group poster session. The group poster is due in Week 11 and should include the following information: • Summary of main academic perspectives on the topic – Summarise the relevant OB academic literature (i.e., OB theory &/or concepts, research published in peer-reviewed and scholarly journal articles, etc.). Remember that your group should have at least one academic journal article per group member. • Summary of main practical implications – Summarise relevant perspectives from management practitioners. Note any contrasts between the academic and practitioner perspectives. Remember that your group should have at least two practitioner articles total. • Include relevant examples (e.g., from real companies or realistic scenarios) to illustrate the importance of the topic for organisations. • Recommendations – Based on academic and practitioner literature, suggest at least two practical recommendations for managers. • Note, you should include appropriate in-text citations in the poster, but you do not need to include a full reference list on the poster itself. The full reference list should be included in the group portfolio. • See 4. Tips for Formatting the Poster and the Poster Session below for more information on the format. The group portfolio is due in Week 11 and should include the following information: • A4-size copy of the poster • The group plan (draft due in workshops week 4) • Completed resource summary templates for each group member (drafts due in workshops week 8) • Complete reference page that includes all of the group’s sources. Format the references using an approved reference style (see Assessment 2). 3. Individually submit an individual analysis of the topic (250 words) and a confidential peer/selfevaluation form. Each group member should individually submit an individual analysis and a confidential peer/selfevaluation form as a single document by 5pm (17:00), the day following the poster session. There is a template on the LMS where you should include the following information: • Confidential evaluation of your own and fellow group members’ contributions to the group assignment (complete the template) • A brief essay (approximately 250 words) that includes the following: o Brief summary of the topic o Individual evaluation and conclusions regarding the topic 4. Tips for Formatting the Poster and the Poster Session • The poster should be formatted as a single poster sheet, no larger than A1. The University of North Carolina has created an excellent resource with tips for how to create effective posters: http://gradschool.unc.edu/academics/resources/postertips.html. Additional tips will be posted on the LMS and discussed in the workshops. • Posters can be easily created using Microsoft PowerPoint. Group members can collaborate remotely using Office 365. Tips for using Office 365 for collaboration can be found on the LMS. • All posters will be presented in a poster session during Week 11. There will be approximately 5 minutes at the beginning and end of the workshop for set-up and take-down of posters. • The poster session will run for approximately 60 minutes. Students are expected to visit other groups’ posters, ask questions, and complete a short evaluation of the posters they visited. These evaluations will be submitted to the facilitator at the end of the poster session. • Two group members should be present at the group’s poster at all times to speak to visitors and answer questions. 5. Research and Citations The group assignment requires that your group has read academic research and practitioner resources other than what is provided in the textbook and in class. The academic research should be high quality and must be referenced appropriately (see Assessment 2 for definitions of high quality and reference format). Your group will need at least one academic article per group member. The group should also read high quality sources that provide information primarily for management practitioners. Your group will need at least two practitioner articles total. Tips for finding appropriate academic and practitioner references will be posted on the LMS and further assistance is available from the teaching staff and the library. Note that Wikipedia and similar sources are not acceptable for this assignment.
