Knowing how verbal and nonverbal messages impact each other will be important for the talks you will be participating in, since you’ll need to gauge whether your message is clear to others. One of the best ways to learn is to observe other people communicating and try reading the different messages they are sending.
Watch the short Business Meeting video. Pay close attention to the ways that each member communicates. Use the spaces below to identify at least one instance of each different type of communication. In each case, specify what message was being sent and how that person communicated that message to the others.
The verbal message was very clear and unambiguous. Summarize what was said by one person during one of his or her responses.
Marcus verbal message:
1. Sales are down in their region
2. The down turn in sales has to stop
3. They must find what is causing of the decline in sales
4. He likes the ideal of a customer survey based on their procedures from first contact through completion of the sale.
The nonverbal message was clear and supported the verbal message.
David and Mya shook their heads in agreement with Marcus suggestion to hire a firm to conduct a customer survey.
The nonverbal message was clear and said something different than the verbal message
Anna squired in her seat when Marcus asked if she agreed they need to find the root cause of the declining sales.
The nonverbal message was difficult to interpret. What did the person do, and what could it have meant?
Marcus rubbing his hands together after Anna made the suggestion to review the customer account procedures was difficult to determine was difficult to interpret. It could have meant he was frustrated or stressed out.
One or more participants communicated nonverbally while someone else was speaking.
Marcus:
rubbed his hands together and shook his head up and down when Anna was speaking
David:
shook his head up and down and clinched his hands while Anna was talking
shook his head up and down when Marcus was talking
reared back in the
Anna:
touching the handouts while David was speaking before she interrupted him
Briefly explain how this will help you as you discuss cultural competency with people at your office and at SNA. What types of responses will you look for in others? What types of messages will you attempt to convey and how?
This worksheet will help me discuss cultural competency with the people at my office and SNA because I will know to how to read and verbal and non-verbal reaction of the material presented.
I will look for the participates hand, head and eye motions to see if they are receiving the presentation favorably.
Also, if anyone is appearing not to be engaged in the presentation, I would try to involve them by asking everyone to share something about their culture belief about how they celebrate birthdays.
By having the participants share this info, it will allow me to attempt to convey that everyone may do things differently, but everyone’s belief is important and can be very interesting if you are open to learning.
I would also try to convey that everyone’s culture should be respected, by asking everyone not to interrupt while the person is sharing info about their culture.
I would further share both of our companies purpose for learning about cultural competency, which is to help people of all cultures by increasing access to education within the different cultural communities it serves by providing bicycles.
