CIS8701 – Big Data Visualisation Assessment 3 – weight 50% Due on 22 May 2017
Specification:
This assignment requires you to consolidate the knowledge gained through lectures, apply the same on various application(s) you have used to write a comprehensive report.
The course covered three key components – design concepts relevant to visualization, visualization principles and applications. You will be articulating these into a document, detailing your experience and knowledge gained so far in this course.
Your report should be structured into four main tasks as detailed below and for the purpose of this assessment, you need to use data visualization tool called Tableau, which can be installed using the link from study desk. 1. Discuss what did you understand by data ‘visualization principles’, and how did you apply this knowledge in working with the Tableau software for the tasks given for the first two assessment, and what did you learn? (max 750 words) 2. What did you discover in terms of how data visualization design can be implemented using Tableau software through the workshop tasks? Did this data visualization software help in following the design concepts? If not, what could be the implications for organizations and users? (max 750 words) 3. If organizations, businesses and other users choose to use data visualization for their work, what would be your advice to them, in terms of choice of applications, processes, user training, policies and investment required in order to properly implement these data visualization concepts. (max 750 words) 4. Provide a table where you map the data visualization principles, design principles and features that can be supported by the Tableau software that you have used. Note that the table will have “three dimensions” and you may need to apply all the principles you learnt in the course to demonstrate knowledge of content, clarity, recognition of content, comprehension etc. I would like you to show this table to three people, seek out what they interpreted from the table, and note to what extent their comprehension of the material presented in the table match with your understanding?
Marking Criteria You need to ensure that the document you prepared is original and is your own work.
Item Quality Range Score Range Demonstration of in depth content understanding through a well laid out, articulated report Poor --- High 0 ---20 Task 1. Discussion on understanding of the three key data visualization concepts discussed in the course, and application of knowledge in this assignment. Poor --- High 0 ---20 Task 2. Discovery of design principles for effective data visualization and how these can be implemented using Tableau, and discussion on its implications. Poor --- High 0 ---20 Task 3. Advice and suggestions to others in implementing data visualization concepts. Poor --- High 0 ---20 Task 4 Table development, overall presentation and report on user feedback. Poor --- High 0 ---20
The above marking criteria are given to provide an initial scope to indicate where the marking concentration is going to be. The real scores will reflect the quality of work, the effort put in in developing the discussions, demonstration of your ability to articulate on reflection, meaningful discussion, and a level of writing that is suitable for an 8000-level course.
All assessments should be submitted via the USQ system, and a single ‘pdf’ file is to be used. Use of other file type is strictly prohibited as this makes distribution to markers difficult.
Any assignment submitted via email will be discarded automatically.
If you have any technical issues in submitting the assessment, you are encouraged to directly interact with the USQ ICT support services.
Refer to USQ policies on late submission, penalties and other submission formalities.
