• Written assessments must be submitted by the student, in person, as hard copy (i.e. not a memory stick, CD or email) unless otherwise stated in this brief. Oral based assessments will be video recorded if stated in this brief.
• Assessments must be submitted by the ‘Due Date’; failure to do so may result in NIL being recorded as the mark.
• It is the student’s responsibility to retain a copy of their work in the event that the college requests an additional copy.

Collection of Work (20%):
• The learner must carry out five comprehensive and objective observations
A variety of methods of recording must be used, for example narrative, anecdotal, time sampling, sociogram, checklist etc.
Each observation should be carried out over a period of approximately 5-10 minutes
A child aged between 0-6 years must be used in all observations (a different child may be used for each observation)
Profile/background of the child to be provided
• Following each observation, the learner will critically evaluate and interpret the observations with the following in mind. Each observation must be evaluated
Against developmental milestones across a range of domains (physical, intellectual, language, emotional and social)
Using the themes, aims and learning goals of Aistear
Using associated child development theory
• Based on your evaluation on each observation, you must provide clear and appropriate recommendations to enhance and scaffold learning and development
Recommendation may be linked where appropriate to Aistear’s themes, aims and learning goals and child development theory
• Upon completing the above, the learner must critically reflect on the observation process – Include
Why observations are important in an early years setting
Provide links to relevant links to legislation and frameworks
A personal reflection on the observation methods used and the process of evaluating and recommending for future learning and development
• Ensure your assignment is organised and well structured.

Project (20%):
• The learner must write an essay on two child developmental theorists. Choose two from the following list and then write an essay which compares and contrasts their theories and provides evidence of application of their theories in current practice within early childhood care and education.

Reflective Journal (20%):
• The learner will compile a comprehensive and detailed reflective journal which links practice and learning with theoretical knowledge. To complete this task the learner must
complete four journal entries. One for each of the following topics
o experiences and learning attending the workshop
o carrying out observations and dealing with parents, children and families
o planning, researching and completing the modular tasks
o your own personal learning journey, including an analysis of your skillset
your work must be organised and well structured
Marks are awarded in the following areas:
• Comprehensive and detailed journals with links between practice and to theoretical knowledge 8 marks
• Each entry as detailed above (3 marks each) 12 marks
Written Exam (40%):
• Six questions will be presented and the learner must attempt to answer four.
• Each question will carry equal marks (10 marks each)
• Time allocated – 2 hours
